INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced Wednesday that University of Indianapolis wide receiver Mar’Quone Edmonds, kicker Scott Miller, and head coach Bob Bartolomeo, along with Central State University linebacker Darius Wilson and William Jewell College return man Thomas Cook have been honored with the GLVC’s first major postseason honors in football. Edmonds was named the GLVC Offensive Player of the Year, Wilson was selected Defensive Player of the Year, Miller took home Special Teams Player of the Year, Cook was given Freshman of the Year accolades, while Bartolomeo was voted by his peers as Coach of the Year. In addition, 66 standouts earned All-Conference distinction while another 24 were named Honorable Mention.
Edmonds helped spearhead a potent Greyhound offense this season, hauling in 8.1 receptions and 113.6 receiving yards per game. His yardage total ranked second-best in the conference, while his receptions-per-game mark was third in the conference and eighth nationally. A senior from Waukegan, Ill., Edmonds also found the end zone on 17 occasions over 11 games, posting a points-per-game average of 9.27, good for 21st in the country. Twice this season he hauled in 14 receptions in a game, a mark which ranked second in the conference. He recently hauled in 14 balls against Delta State on Nov. 3, and first accomplished the feat against Central State on Oct. 13, when he totaled a conference-record 212 receiving yards as well. A first-team All-GLIAC selection last year, Edmonds improved on his 76 receptions and 965 yards from a year ago with 89 catches for 1,250 yards and 17 touchdowns this season, all of which were good for single-season school records. He will also finish his time on campus as the program’s career leader in those same statistical categories.
Wilson, a senior from Matteson, Ill., is the nation’s leading tackler at 12.6 stops per game and was the conference’s top hitter nearly every week as he recorded 17 or more hits in a game on four occasions this year. He posted NCAA single-game highs for the season with 16 solo stops and 22.0 total tackles against Saint Joseph’s on Sept. 22, one week after setting his previous GLVC-record of 17.0 hits against Urbana on Sept. 15. In the 23-21 victory over William Jewell on Sept. 29, Wilson was “held” to 8.0 tackles, although he recorded three sacks in the victory, the second-highest total in the league this year. This past month, Wilson delivered 19.0 tackles against Missouri S&T on Oct. 6 and 17.0 stops versus Quincy on Oct. 27. With one regular-season game remaining on the schedule, a Nov. 17 matchup with Kentucky State, Wilson owns conference highs in solo (68), assisted (58) and total tackles (126).
Miller earned special teams recognition as the conference’s top-scoring kicker with 83 points on the year. A redshirt sophomore from Indianapolis, Ind., Miller was good on 53 of 55 point-after-touchdown attempts this year and cleared 10 of 11 field goals to average 7.5 points per game. Last year he set a UIndy program record with 37 made PATs, a mark he shattered this season by 16 kicks through the uprights. The first-team All-GLVC kicker, who also earned GLVC Special Teams Player of the Week accolades on Oct. 29, posted a school-record 48 consecutive PATs made this season before his streak was snapped with a block in the Hounds’ 33-18 win over Delta State.
Cook was lauded as the conference’s top newcomer after an electric freshman season in both the backfield and return game. The Dallas, Texas, native ranked first in the league with a kick-return-average of 19.1 yards and was third with a 21.4-yard average in punt returns. In the Oct. 20 matchup with Saint Joseph’s, Cook set a GLVC record with 208 combined returned yards, with 122 yards coming on kickoffs and 86 stemming from a punt return for a touchdown, which also marked the longest return in the conference this year. One week later, Cook registered league-bests in both kick returns (7) and kick return yardage (153). His season peaked in the Oct. 20 matchup against the Pumas as his 208 return yards coupled with 19 receiving yards and a conference-record 225 yards rushing, which included a pair of touchdowns, to give him a GLVC-best 452 all-purpose yards on the day. Cook also finished the season eighth in conference rushing with 52.0 yards per game.
In his third year as the UIndy head man, Bartolomeo guided the Hounds to their first-ever nine-win season and first-ever NCAA Division II playoff berth. His Greyhounds compiled a spotless 8-0 record in conference play on the way the taking the 2012 GLVC Championship. Indianapolis, which has not lost to a D-II team since the season opener, is making its first postseason appearance since joining Division II back in 1979. It's only other NCAA playoff berth came in 1975 when the team competed as a Division III squad. Under Bartolomeo’s direction, 14 Greyhounds earned All-Conference distinction this season, including 13 on the first team.
A total of 33 student-athletes were selected to both the first- and second-team All-Conference squads, with each squad comprised of a quarterback, three running backs, four wide receivers, one H-back, six offensive linemen, five defensive linemen, five linebackers, five defensive backs, a kicker, punter, and one return specialist.
Five unanimous selections highlighted the 33-member first-team All-Conference squad, led by Edmonds and Wilson. Indianapolis running back Klay Fiechter and linebacker Max Davis joined Saint Joseph’s Julian Walker as the other unanimous first-team selections. UIndy led all teams with 13 first-team honorees, followed by Missouri S&T with 10. The Greyhounds and Miners accumulated the most first- and second-team All-GLVC representatives with 14 each.
