INDIANAPOLIS – Quincy University has swept the 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference men’s soccer annual awards, becoming the first-ever conference school to accomplish the feat, it was announced by the league office Thursday evening.  Senior forward Jordan Roberts was selected by the GLVC coaches as the Offensive Player of the Year, senior defender Chris Garavaglia was named Defensive Player of the Year, freshman forward Artan Emini was chosen as the league’s Freshman of the Year, while Mike Carpenter was honored by his peers as Coach of the Year.  The annual awards were presented Thursday at a reception on the eve of the 2014 GLVC Championship Tournament.

Roberts becomes just the third Quincy standout to be honored as the league’s top offensive player as Grant Ellison was tabbed Offensive Player of the Year in 2011, and Matt Vollink earned co-Player of the Year in 2000.  The Durham, England, native posted impressive numbers in conference play this year, taking 119 shots for an average of 7.93 per game.  Of those shots, 17 found the back of the net, while he also assisted on four more to total 20 points on the year.  He currently ranks second among all NCAA Division II players with 21 goals and 47 points overall, and fourth with an average 1.11 goals per game.  Roberts was the lone unanimous selection to the All-GLVC First Team.

Garavaglia becomes the first repeat winner of the league’s Defensive Player of the Year honor as he was also the coaches’ pick in 2012.  The St. Louis, Missouri, native anchored a Hawks defense that recorded a school-record 13 shutouts and allowed eight goals this season.  Quincy ranks first in the country in both goals-against average (0.41) and shutout percentage (0.68).

Emini earns the league’s top newcomer award after playing in all 19 games for the Hawks, scoring six goals and recording six assists in his freshman season.  Emini put together his best performance of the season against Saint Joseph’s College, when the Yorkville, Illinois, native scored a hat trick and added a pair of assists to total eight points.  In conference games only this year, Emini tallied six goals and four assists to rank ninth in the league with 16 points.

In his third year at the helm of Quincy, Carpenter led the Hawks to their fourth undefeated regular season in school history and the first unbeaten season since 1970.  Carpenter is 44-7-8 over his career in Quincy, and currently has the Hawks 17-0-2 overall, 13-0-2 in league play, first in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region rankings, and No. 3 in the latest NSCAA/Continental Tire national coaches poll.  The QU mentor garners his first career GLVC Coach of the Year honor, and has now guided his squad to back-to-back regular season conference titles.  This is also the first time a Quincy men’s soccer coach as earned the league’s annual award.  In addition to Roberts and Garavaglia, Carpenter mentored sophomore Xhovani Dokaj and senior goalkeeper Drew Duncan to first-team All-GLVC honors, sophomore back Robbie Tays, senior back Jake Bond, and senior midfielders Ethan Venvertloh Steve McAnany to second-team selections, and sophomore midfielder Taylor Reis as a third-team honoree.

Twenty-four other men’s soccer stars earned recognition from the GLVC coaches, as three 11-member All-Conference teams were also released on Thursday.

Of the 33 All-Conference selections, 28 honorees hailed from five teams, including a league-best nine from Quincy.  Drury, Lewis and Missouri-St. Louis each had five representatives honored, followed by Indianapolis with four.  In addition to Quincy’s four selections, four first-team nods also went to Drury senior forwards Nick Ammann and Alex Nagel, midfielder Jack Mathis, and back Ryan Haas.  Also selected to the team was Bellarmine senior midfielder Dan Schiavi, Lewis senior back David Pyle, and UMSL junior midfielder Jon Huelsman.
