INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Southern Indiana women’s cross country team clinched its fourth straight Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Cross Country Championship on Saturday at the Lewis University Cross Country Course in Romeoville, Illinois. The Screaming Eagles scored 41 points and topped runner-up Lewis University (85) and third-place finisher University of Wisconsin-Parkside (92) for their ninth overall conference crown and sixth in the last seven years.
The win also moves USI into a tie for first with former conference member Ashland University with nine all-time conference titles.
The University of Indianapolis placed fourth overall with 96 points, followed by Bellarmine University (102), Truman State University (152), Missouri S&T (230), Maryville University (236), William Jewell College (264), and Saint Joseph’s College (270) in the top 10. McKendree University (295), Drury University (320), Rockhurst University (345), and Quincy University (450) rounded out the field.
Bellarmine earned the individual crown for the third consecutive year as senior Emily Frith crossed the line first in 21 minutes, 29.27 seconds. Frith, who was also named GLVC Runner of the Year, successfully defended her 2013 conference title to put a stamp on an impressive career that saw her finish third as a freshman in 2011 and second as a sophomore in 2012. Frith ends her cross country career at the conference level as one of the most decorated runners in league history. Outside of Lewis’ Magdalena Paszta, who earned three individual titles and a runner-up finish from 1994-97, no other runner has turned in a more accomplished four-year performance at the GLVC Championships than Frith. This is the first time in conference history that Bellarmine has posted individual first-place finishes in three consecutive years.
Lewis’ Amanda Farrough (21:38.48) finished second overall, improving on her third-place finish from a year ago when she was named GLVC Freshman of the Year. Southern Indiana’s Julia Kohnen (21.41.17), competing in her first-ever GLVC Championship after playing four years on the USI soccer team, placed third in the race, while Bellarmne’s Flannery Musk (21:53.61) and Lewis’ Kristen Bonsor (21:54.95) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, to earn All-GLVC honors.
Places six through 15 were also named All-Conference honorees, including Southern Indiana’s Skylair Hilton (22:01.20, 6th), Emily Roberts (7th, 22:09.08), Cathryn Peter (12th, 22:29.63) and Jamie Adkins (13th, 22:31.49), Maryville’s Elizabeth Kiblinger (8th, 22:12.76), UW-Parkside’s Moriah Palmer (9th, 22:22.39) and Lindsay Rogers (14th, 22:34.61), UIndy’s Jacklyn Howland (10th, 22:23.70) and Haley Havert (11th, 22:26.63), and Missouri S&T’s Megan Schulte (15th, 22:38.07).
At the conclusion of the GLVC Championship, Southern Indiana’s Roberts was named GLVC Freshman of the Year as the highest-placing freshman, while Mike Hillyard was voted by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year, marking his fourth straight honor and ninth overall.
Coverage of the 2014 GLVC Cross Country Championships will be shown on the GLVC Sports Network at a time and date to be determined.
