INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) recognized 109 men’s and women’s teams Tuesday as recipients of the 2013-14 Team Academic All-GLVC Award.  The GLVC recognizes each team from member institutions that have maintained a 3.30 grade point average for the academic year.  The 109 honorees sets a new conference record after last year’s mark of 100 surpassed the previous record of 85 in 2011-12.

The McKendree University women’s tennis squad once again registered the conference’s highest team GPA during the 2013-14 academic year with a 3.80 after the Bearcats led the league last year with a 3.77.  Drury University’s women’s tennis program placed second overall for a second-straight season with a 3.78, while the Maryville University women’s cross country team turned in the third-best GPA at 3.74.

After Maryville and Rockhurst University led all institutions with a conference-record 10 teams honored last year, the Saints and Hawks were joined by Drury and McKendree in a four-way tie for first this season with 10 programs each.  This marks the fifth-straight season a GLVC member has boasted 10 members on the list, and the third time at least two schools hit the double-digit mark.  Drury and Maryville notched 10 honorees in 2009-10,

Maryville was the conference’s sole 10-team school in 2010-11, Drury garnered 10 distinctions in 2011-12, and Maryville and Rockhurst each had 10 programs in 2012-13.

Bellarmine University placed just outside the four-way tie with nine teams honored, while the University of Indianapolis, Lewis University and Truman State University tied with eight representatives each.

There were a total of 88 women’s teams and 21 men’s squads tabbed for the honor, which marks an increase of six and three programs, respectively, from a year ago.

Women’s soccer teams from 13 of the conference’s 16 schools were honored this year, marking back-to-back seasons the sport has led the way.  Elsewhere on the women’s side, volleyball was represented by 12 schools, while softball and tennis has 11 programs each and basketball, cross country and golf had 10 apiece.  Track and field netted six teams and swimming and diving had three.

The sport of tennis led the men’s honorees for the fourth-straight season with eight of the 13 conference squads garnering the award. There were four golf squads, three baseball programs, two cross country and soccer teams, and one basketball and swimming unit representing the men on the Team Academic All-GLVC list.

Women’s tennis was also the sport most commonly found atop each school’s list.  Four GLVC members saw its highest team GPA come from women’s tennis while three other conference institutions were paced by their women’s basketball teams.  The remaining nine schools were led by women’s cross country (2), women’s golf (2), men’s tennis (2), women’s soccer (1), softball (1), and volleyball (1).
