EAST PEORIA, IL – In the semifinal round of the 2015 Great Lakes Valley Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament, East No. 3 seed University of Indianapolis and East No. 2 seed Lewis University both took five-set wins to advance to tomorrow’s Championship match set for Sunday, Nov. 22 at 12 p.m. Central Time, and is being held in East Peoria, Ill., at the EastSide Centre.
No. 3E Indianapolis got the semifinal action started with another upset, topping No. 1E McKendree University 3-2 in a five-set barnburner. The Greyhounds took a 2-0 lead into intermission with scores of 25-22 and 25-18, but it was the Bearcats who came out of break fired up, turning the tables on UIndy with two wins in a row of their own, 25-20 and 25-22. McK went up 8-7 at the tiebreaker’s halfway point, but the Hounds were eventually able to win it 15-13. This was UIndy’s eighth semifinal win, while Sunday’s title match appearance will be its seventh.
In the second semifinal match, No. 2E Lewis pulled off another 3-2 upset of its own with the winner over No. 1W Rockhurst University. Not only did the 23rd-ranked Flyers advance to the Championship title match, but they also defeated a team in the fifth-ranked Hawks that previously went unbeaten in the regular season against league foes and had only conceded three sets to GLVC opponents, two coming in a win against the Flyers on Oct. 30. Lewis will be competing in its ninth championship match and has won a league-leading eight times.
Tomorrow’s match will be the fifth meeting between Lewis and Indianapolis in the postseason’s main event with the series tied 2-2. In 2009 and 2011, UIndy came out winners, while Lewis was the victor in 2007 and 2010.
