INDIANAPOLIS – For the first time in program history, the University of Missouri-St. Louis has earned a Great Lakes Valley Conference title in the sport of men’s golf. The Tritons closed out the season with a 3-2 win over Lewis University Tuesday afternoon at the GLVC Championships, contested at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana.
UMSL, which finished runner-up in the match play competition last year and was the top seed two years back, finally got over the hump on Tuesday by knocking off two-time defending GLVC champion Indianapolis in this morning’s semifinals before defeating top-seeded Lewis in the afternoon.
In title bout, the Tritons were quick to post points out of the gate as they took the first two matches before tying with the Flyers in both the third and fourth contests.
Colby Yates was 2-0 as the Tritons’ leadoff man Tuesday and quickly put the advantage on UMSL’s side following a 74-78 victory over Lewis’ Ryan Frederick. In the second match, Julien de Poyen registered UMSL’s second point of the day with a 75-79 victory over Jeremy Fraser.
Throughout the match, the feel was that UMSL boasted a strong lead in the first two matches, and Steffey and his Flyers seemed to be bringing up the rear in the final two matches. When UMSL’s Markus Lindberg and Lewis’ Austin Buente each survived the 40 miles-per-hour winds with a pair of 81s, the fourth match became the must-see matchup of the day.
Trialing by two shots heading into the 18th, Matt Barry capitalized on some trouble that Robert Dofflemyer found to hit a 10-foot par putt that secured the two-shot swing and halved the match. With the tie, the half-point each player received put UMSL at 3.0 points, which clinched the match.
GLVC Champion Alex Thode earned the match’s final point when he defeated Anthony Cope of UMSL, 73-78.
Earlier in the day, UMSL and Lewis advanced to the match play finals by defeating UIndy and No. 4 seed Illinois Springfield by identical 3-2 scores, respectively.
While it's just the first GLVC championship in program history, the victory marks the third conference title overall for UMSL with the 1992 and 1993 men's golf teams winning MIAA championships. It is also just the second GLVC title won by a men's team (baseball in 2003) and the fourth overall in the athletics department (softball in 2013 and 2014).
