WATERLOO, Ill. – University of Indianapolis chipped away and used every round of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Golf Championship to go from third position in the first round, to second place in round two before finally winning the 2015 title in the final round of the 54-hole meet at the Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Illinois, earning a conference record fourth-consecutive title.
The Greyhounds carded a 308-300-304=912 (+48) team score, 14 strokes better than the runners-up from Missouri-St. Louis (301-317=308=926, +62), while just one stroke separated UMSL from third-place finishers Southern Indiana that carded a +63 (304-301-322=927).
In fourth place was Drury, which stayed consistent in that spot through all three rounds with totals of 320-313-328=961, +97. William Jewell (325-315-351=991, +127) and Lewis (326-320-347=993, +129) accounted for fifth and sixth, respectively, while Bellarmine (327-330-342=999, +135) and Illinois Springfield (323-332-344=999, +135) tied for seventh. Maryville finished with a +156, 1020 (335-339-346) in ninth, while Quincy went 343-330-353=1026 for +162 and 10th. Rounding out the field of 14 teams include McKendree (346-334-351=1031, +167), Truman State (348-338-355=1041, +177), Rockhurst (354-343-351=1048, +184) and Saint Joseph’s (353-359-369=1081, +217), respectively in 11th, 12th, 13th and 14th.
Earning medalist honors, having led through all three rounds was USI sophomore, Allison Koester. Koester started strong, carding a one-under-par 71 in the opening round; the only player all weekend to hit a sub-par round. She got a second-round, one-over-par 73 and carded a final round of 78 to finish with a 222 +6. In second place was Triton freshman Stefaniya Ivanova (72-80-73=225) at +9 and classmate Annika Haynes of UIndy took third with a 76-72-78=226 +10. Rounding out the top five finishers was Greyhound senior Chanice Young (73-79-75=227, +11) in fourth and junior teammate Brooke Beegle (80-74-74=228, +12) earned fifth.
The top-five finishers of the championship automatically earned a spot on the All-GLVC First Team. The other five players on the 10-member All-GLVC team, as well as Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year will be voted on by league coaches and announced next week.
