LIBERTY, Missouri – The Missouri S&T men and the University of Indianapolis women hold the lead in their respective team races after Friday’s first day of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which is being hosted at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri.
Through six events scored, S&T holds a commanding 34-point lead with 66 points overall, followed by Lewis University in second with 32 points. UIndy and the University of Southern Indiana sit tied for third with 24 points, while Bellarmine University is fifth with 15 points, and Maryville University, McKendree University and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside are all tied for sixth with 13 points each. Rounding out the 12-team men’s field is Saint Joseph’s College and host William Jewell in ninth with 11 points, Truman State University in 11th with 10 points, and Drury University with two points.
On the women’s side, UIndy (65.5) has a slim advantage over defending outdoor and reigning indoor champion Lewis (57). Maryville (24) sits third after the first day, followed by Missouri S&T (20), Saint Joseph’s (16), Bellarmine (12), Southern Indiana (9.5), McKendree (9), Truman State (9), UW-Parkside (7) and William Jewell (5).
Among the highlights recorded on Friday, GLVC records were broken in both the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase and 10,000 meters, as well as the women’s pole vault and 100-meter hurdles. Lewis’ Andrew McLain successfully defended his conference title by reestablishing his league record he set last year (31:11.10) with this season’s winning time of 30:34.18.
McLain’s teammate on the women’s side, Rebecca Preisler, showed she is in form to go for a clean sweep of NCAA indoor and outdoor titles in the pole vault, setting an NCAA automatic qualifying standard and new GLVC record in the event with a clearance of 13-09.25’ or 4.20 meters. The previous GLVC record was 3.69 meters while the automatic mark for the NCAA Championships is 3.98.
Southern Indiana’s Hunter Motz set a new GLVC record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by crossing the line in 8:58.38, while Lewis’ Megan Marchildon turned in a new conference best in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.91.
In addition to the four conference records set Friday, 12 GLVC Champions were crowned, one NCAA automatic qualifying mark was hit, and 18 provisional qualifying standards were met, all of which were seen during 11.5 hours of live coverage on the GLVC Sports Network.
Earning gold in their respective events Friday were Bellarmine’s Davis Hallberg (pole vault, 15-04.25), Indianapolis’ Kieran Casey (3,000-meter steeplechase, 11:02.14), Farin Hickman (javelin, 119-09), Lissette Mendivil (discus, 163-03), and Austin Hogan (discus, 157-06), Lewis’ Amber Cook (triple jump, 38-06.75), Maryville’s Elizabeth Kiblinger (10,000 meters, 36:42.15), and Missouri S&T’s Peter Simpson (javelin, 184-11) and Jaren Underwood (46-1.50)
