EAST PEORIA, Ill. – Six teams advanced to the second day of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Championship Tournament after competing in eight games, including six in the winners’ bracket and two in the losers’ bracket. Competition resumes tomorrow, May 2 at 11 a.m. Central Time at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Illinois.
In true top-seed fashion, Missouri-St. Louis went 2-0 on the day, beating No. 8 Rockhurst in game one, 9-0 (5 innings), which marked yet another perfect game for GLVC Pitcher of the Year Hannah Perryman, before winning game seven over No. 4 Truman State, 6-4. In game two, Truman beat No. 5 Bellarmine, 3-1, while No. 7 Illinois Springfield upset No. 2 Indianapolis, 3-0. Game four saw another upset, as No. 6 Lewis beat No. 3 Southern Indiana, 4-1. The upsets forced higher seeds UIndy and USI to face each other early in game six, where the Greyhounds found their rhythm and knocked the Screaming Eagles out of the tournament with an 8-0 victory. Bellarmine was also sent home today when Rockhurst turned in a 3-2 upset against the Knights in game five. In game eight, despite a late push by the Prairie Stars, Lewis burst through with an 8-6 win over UIS for the only other perfect 2-0 mark of the day.
Highlighting all the action were the 16 home runs that sailed over the outfield fences, including one grand slam for Molly Manietta of UIS. Both Lewis and Truman hit three dingers in a single game alone while UMSL, Lewis and UIndy each went yard twice in a single game.
On Saturday, game nine will open the day when Rockhurst takes on UIS at 11 a.m. CT, while UIndy will battle TSU at the same time in game 10. The Tritons will be back in action for game 11 against the Flyers at 1 p.m. CT, while game 12 and 13 will be determined based on the results of the first three games of the day. Game 12 will be between winners of game nine and 10 and begin at 3 p.m. CT, whereas game 13 will see the game 12 winner face the game 11 loser at 5 p.m. CT.
All games will be streamed live on the GLVC Sports Network at GLVCsports.com/watch, and live stats will be available as well.
