INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis has earned its fourth consecutive Great Lakes Valley Conference All-Sports Trophy, the league office announced Tuesday. The Greyhounds totaled 194.5 points for the 2014-15 academic year.
UIndy earned its seventh All-Sports Trophy in program history by 20.5 points over Lewis University. The Greyhounds have now captured the GLVC All-Sports Trophy in the 1978-79, 1994-95, 2002-03, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons.
The GLVC All-Sports Trophy is presented to the institution that demonstrates the best all-around performance in the league’s 20 sponsored sports. Points are allocated based on overall finish in the league standings and finish in the respective sport’s conference tournament.
Led by Dr. Sue Willey, the school’s Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics, Indianapolis captured five GLVC Championships this season to earn first-place points in men’s soccer, football, women’s tennis, women’s golf and women’s outdoor track and field. Additionally, the Hounds also posted runner-up finishes in women’s indoor track and field, men’s tennis and softball, and garnered third-place points in the sports of men’s golf, baseball, men’s indoor track and field and men’s and women’s swimming and diving.
Winners of a GLVC-record 13 All-Sports Trophies, Lewis finished runner-up for the second straight season with 174.0 points, highlighted by conference titles in men’s and women’s indoor track and field. Drury University (156.0) placed third with a league-high six GLVC Championships this season in the sports of men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s tennis, and baseball.
The University of Southern Indiana (145.5) and Bellarmine University (132.0) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, while Truman State University (126.0) placed sixth overall in its second season competing in the GLVC. The University of Missouri-St. Louis (123.0), William Jewell College (105.5) and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (104.5) were the other three teams to eclipse the 100-point mark this year, respectively placing seventh, eighth and ninth, while Missouri S&T rounded out the top 10 with 96.0 points. Quincy University (91.0), McKendree University (83.5), Rockhurst University (80.0), Maryville University (79.5), Saint Joseph’s College (66.5) and the University of Illinois Springfield (52.5) rounded out the field.
The All-Sports Trophy was first instituted in the GLVC during the 1978-79 season and seven different institutions have claimed the award.
