Missouri S&T, UIndy Take Home GLVC Outdoor Track & Field Championships

LIBERTY, Missouri – Missouri S&T successfully defended its men’s conference title Saturday evening, while the University of Indianapolis women reclaimed the top spot for the sixth time in seven years at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which was held at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri.

S&T garnered 174 points to capture its third overall outdoor title since joining the GLVC in the 2005-06 season.  In addition to last year, the Miners also captured top billing in 2009.

Lewis placed second in the 12-team field with 105 points, followed by McKendree (91.50), which posted its best finish in GLVC Championship competition.  Southern Indiana (88.5) and Indianapolis (78) finished in the top five.  Placing in spots sixth through 12th were Saint Joseph’s (71), Truman State (64), William Jewell (55), UW-Parkside (38), Bellarmine (31), Maryville (21) and Drury (2). 

Following the competition, individuals from four conference institutions were honored with major postseason awards.  William Jewell’s Blake Alexander and McKendree’s Ryan Pearce were voted by the coaches as GLVC Track Athlete and Field Athlete of the Year, respectively, while newcomer Austin Hogan of UIndy was tabbed GLVC Freshman of the Year.  Missouri S&T’s Sterling Martin earned his second straight GLVC Coach of the Year accolade.

On the women’s side, Indianapolis returned to the top spot in the conference after seeing Lewis capture the 2014 crown on its home turf.  The Greyhounds earned 181.33 points to the secure a four-point advantage over Lewis, which comes in the second-closest title race in the conference history.

The Flyers settled for second place with 177.33 points, while Bellarmine (129), Missouri S&T (71) and Saint. Joseph’s (58.33) completed the top five.  Maryville (44), William Jewell (42), Southern Indiana (34.5), Truman State (31.5) and UW-Parkside (29) rounded out the top 10, leaving McKendree (20) in 11th and Drury out of the team standings with a “no score.”

Bellarmine’s Meghan Jones and Lewis’ Chantel Stennis shared the GLVC Track Athlete of the Year honor after a vote of the conference coaches forced the tie.  Indianapolis’ Farin Hickman was picked as the GLVC Field Athlete of the Year while Lewis newcomer Zoe Mead was recognized as GLVC Freshman of the Year.  UIndy mentor Scott Fangman was voted by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year. 

All event winners earned first-team All-GLVC distinction, while the runners-up garnered second-team acclaim.
