ROLLA, Mo. – The University of Southern Indiana women’s cross country team clinched its sixth straight Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Cross Country Championship in record fashion Saturday at the Missouri S&T Golf Course in Rolla, Missouri.

The Screaming Eagles scored 28 points to defeat runner-up Bellarmine University (83) by 55 points, marking the largest margin of victory in conference history.  The previous record was 52 points, set by former GLVC member Ashland University (16 points) over USI (68) in 1985.

Additionally, Southern Indiana junior Emily Roberts set the official GLVC Championship-record winning time of 20 minutes, 36.03 seconds over the 6,000-meter course.  Her time bested the previous conference mark of 20:43.56, set by University of Wisconsin-Parkside’s Jessica Monson in 2008.  USI’s Heather Cooksey captured the 2005 title in 19:54.78, however the course was deemed shorter than 6,000 meters.

Lewis University trailed Bellarmine in third with 87 points, just one marker ahead of fourth-place UW-Parkside (88).  Truman State University (158), University of Indianapolis (175), Drury University (214) and Maryville University (221) took places fifth through eighth, respectively, while McKendree University (288) and host Missouri S&T (292) notched top-10 results.  William Jewell College (302), and Rockhurst University (315) were 11th and 12th, followed by Saint Joseph’s College (322) and University of Illinois Springfield (334) and Quincy University (No Team Score) in the 15-team field.

USI senior Jessica Reeves (21:01.98) finished runner-up behind Roberts, giving the Screaming Eagles their first 1-2 finish in GLVC Championship history.  UW-Parkside junior Moriah Palmer (21:33.06), Bellarmine sophomore Karly Gawarecki (21:50.37) and Truman State senior Laura Tarantino (21:57.92) were third through fifth, respectively.

Missouri S&T junior Megan Schulte (22:01.54) was sixth overall, followed by USI sophomore Hope Jones and junior Jessica Lincoln (22:08.62) in seventh and eighth.  Lewis senior Mollie Dalton (22:09.99) and USI senior Cathryn Peter (22:13.16) rounded out the top 10.  The remaining five All-Conference honorees on the 15-member team determined by finishing position included UW-Parkside senior Lindsay Rogers (22:15.43), Lewis sophomore Megan Shaffer (22:15.62), Indianapolis junior Briana Leonard (22:16.57), and Bellarmine juniors Erin Crone (22:20.52) and Kyndel Guyton (22:20.91).

At the conclusion of the GLVC Championship, Roberts was named the GLVC Runner of the Year, making her the sixth Screaming Eagle to earn the award and the first since Jackie Henderson in 2011.  With a 23rd-place finish, UW-Parkside newcomer Hollie Poehler (22:56.39) was the highest placing freshman in the field and earned GLVC Freshman of the Year honors for her efforts.  USI’s Mike Hillyard was voted by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year, marking his sixth straight honor and 11th overall.
