ROLLA, Mo. – The University of Southern Indiana men’s cross country team extended its league record with its 12th consecutive Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Cross Country Championship on Saturday at the Missouri S&T Golf Course in Rolla, Missouri.

The Screaming Eagles totaled 28 points on the day, placing all five scorers in the top 10.  USI netted a margin of victory of 38 points over runner-up Lewis University (66), marking the team’s largest winning cushion since the Screaming Eagles (24) topped the Flyers (88) in 2013.

The win gave USI its league-best 24th GLVC crown, while the current streak of 12 straight titles is the longest for any team in any sport in Conference history.

Bellarmine University (75), University of Wisconsin-Parkside (92) and Saint Joseph’s College (183) finished third through fifth, respectively, while host Missouri S&T (197), University of Indianapolis (221), Truman State University (235), Drury University (238) and University of Illinois Springfield (254) closed out the top 10.  McKendree University (256), Maryville University (345) and Quincy University (433) followed in the final three positions in the 13-team field.  William Jewell College participated but did not register a team score.

For the first time in the 38-year history of the GLVC Championships, a Bellarmine runner was the first to cross the finish line as junior Chris Striegel posted a 16-second victory with an 8,000-meter time of 24 minutes, 02.23 seconds.  His time was the second-fastest 8K winning time in GLVC Championship history, second only to former USI standout Johnnie Guy, who clocked in at 23:46 for his first of three straight GLVC titles in 2013.  Striegel, who shaved more than a minute off his third-place time of 25:09.9 from a year ago, was named GLVC Runner of the Year following his winning effort.

Southern Indiana junior Bastian Grau (24:18.18), Lewis junior Michael Leet (24:35.39), USI senior Chase Broughton (24:41.05), and UW-Parkside junior Armando Torres (24:45.40) finished second through fifth, respectively.  USI senior Noah Lutz (24:45.52) and sophomore Darin Lawrence (24:58.51) were sixth and seventh, followed by Lewis junior Sergio Miranda (25:06.42) and USI juniors Cain Parker (25:11.90) and James Cecil (25:13.54) in the top 10.  The remaining five All-Conference honorees on the 15-member team determined by finishing position included Bellarmine junior James Frederickson (25:14.67), Lewis junior James Frederickson (25:23.20), Southern Indiana freshman Nathan Hall (25:26.42), Missouri S&T junior Joe Bindner (25:27.84), and Saint Joseph’s senior Justin Hays (25:29.54).

At the conclusion of the GLVC Championship, USI’s Hall was named GLVC Freshman of the Year as he was the highest-placing freshman in the race.  Southern Indiana mentor Mike Hillyard was voted by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year.  His honor marks his 12th-straight honor and 15th overall.
