INDIANAPOLIS -- No. 1 Rockhurst University won a penalty kick shootout against No. 7 University of Indianapolis to earn the 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Championship on Sunday, Nov. 6 at Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis. The Hawks defended their Conference Championship title after tying the Greyhounds 1-1 through double overtime before the 4-3 PK advantage.
Indianapolis started the scoring early at 11:40 to take the 1-0 lead off the foot of Ben Rohder, which held up until 42:26 when Sean Michel moved things even at 1-1 just before the half. Things stayed scoreless in the second period to force overtime, but the extra 20 minutes was still not enough for either team to break through with the sudden victory score. Penalty kicks ensued, which saw Rockhurst make four of five attempts, while UIndy missed its last two that gave the Hawks the hardware.
Both teams took 14 shots through 110 minutes, but Rockhurst had the edge in shots on goal, 7-3. Hounds’ goalkeeper Miles Palmer had more to do in net, making six saves to Logan Feldmann’s two for the Hawks.
NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer does not utilize an automatic qualifier, but the top-seeded Hawks (16-2-2), who won their sixth GLVC title and are ranked sixth nationally and first in the Midwest Region, have the numbers on their side. Hosting rights and opponents will be determined Monday night during the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Tournament Selection Show at 6:30 p.m. ET.
