INDIANAPOLIS -- No. 4 McKendree University defeated No. 2 Rockhurst University to claim the 2016 Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Soccer Championship on Sunday, Nov. 6 at Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis. The Bearcats earned their first-ever GLVC Women’s Soccer Championship title with a 2-1 overtime victory, becoming just the third No. 4 seed to do so.

Much like Friday’s semifinal match, Rockhurst went ahead early, as Kaley Nieters finished off a chance in the 13th minute to put the Hawks ahead 1-0. It wasn’t until the 55th minute that Alyssa Reininger pulled McKendree even after redirecting a free kick from Sydnee Carroll. That’s all either team could muster in regulation before the league’s Offensive Player of the Year turned up the heat just three minutes into the overtime period, as Carroll blasted the game-winner into the right side netting.

Rockhurst had the edge in shots 14-6 with both teams putting five on goal. Rockhurst’s goalkeeper Ali Wallner made three saves in the loss and Zoe Brochu made four for McKendree.

The fourth-seeded Bearcats (16-4-1), who garnered the program's first Conference title in just their third appearance in the postseason event since joining the GLVC in 2012, earned the league's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament.  The second-seeded Hawks (17-2-2) will see their postseason fate determined on Monday evening's NCAA Division II Selection Show at 6 p.m. ET.
