CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – Two-time defending Great Lakes Valley Conference champion Drury University leads both the men's and women's races after the first of four days at the 2016 GLVC Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Panthers jumped out to a 45-point lead on the women’s side, but hold just a three-point advantage in the men’s race following opening night action at the Crawfordsville Aquatic Center in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

On the men's side, Drury tallied 169 points Wednesday, just three points better than second-place Missouri S&T (163), which trailed the Panthers by a single point following the first day last year. Indianapolis is third in the race with 130 points, followed by Lewis (94), Truman State (83), William Jewell (68), Missouri-St. Louis (38) and Bellarmine (28).

Drury scored 220 points on the women’s side, while Truman State (175) and Indianapolis (104) sit second and third, respectively. William Jewell (91) and Lewis (50) are fourth and fifth, followed by Bellarmine (42), Maryville (34), Quincy (28) and Missouri-St. Louis (25).

Eight GLVC champions were crowned Wednesday, with five of those race winners setting new league records.
Sarah Pullen won her third straight 1,000-yard Freestyle title with a GLVC record time of 10:07.52, which bested her previous league mark of 10:08.35 set at the 2014 meet.

Pullen was joined by fellow Drury medalists Alex Reinbrecht (9:14.54) in the men’s 1,000 Free and Wen Xu, who captured her second straight title in the women’s 50 Free with a time of 23.01.

Truman State’s Evyn Spencer repeated as GLVC champion in the women’s 200-yard Individual Medley with a new GLVC record time of 2:00.95.

UIndy’s Rodrigo Codo Berti also set a new conference standard in the event with a winning time of 1:48.24.
Missouri S&T’s Keith Sponsler broke his GLVC record in the men’s 50 Free during the prelims (20.23) before breaking it again to win the finals with a time of 20.04, while runner-up Daniel Rzadkowski of Drury tied Sponsler’s previous league best of 20.28 set Feb. 12, 2015.

In the 200-yard Medley Relay, the Drury women (1:43.20) and UIndy men (1:28.70) touched the wall first, the latter of which did so in record fashion, breaking the previous league best of 1:28.90 held by the 2014 UIndy squad.

All first- and second-place finishers are awarded first- and second-team All-GLVC honors, respectively.
