CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The Missouri S&T men and Drury University women will head into the final day of competition with the lead at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, which is being held at the Crawfordsville Aquatic Center in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
Missouri S&T entered Friday with a 26-point advantage and will head into the final day with a 17-point lead over two-time defending GLVC Champion Drury. The Miners sit atop the men’s standings with 585.5 points, followed by the Panthers in second with 568.5 and Indianapolis in third with 531.
Truman State (324) and Lewis (298) swapped fourth and fifth positions on Friday, while William Jewell (272), Missouri-St. Louis (202), Bellarmine (103) and Maryville (34) maintained their spots in the nine-team field.
Drury owns the lead with 720 points on the women’s side, followed by Truman State (667.5) and Indianapolis (434) in second and third, respectively. William Jewell (345) and Lewis (247) are fourth and fifth, leaving Bellarmine (168), Maryville (127), Quincy (106.5) and Missouri-St. Louis (92) to close out the pack.
Drury set the GLVC winning scoring records in 2014 with the men accumulating 838 points, while the women netting 1,011 points.
After seeing 12 GLVC records set in swimming events over the first two days, three more standards were set on Friday in the men’s and women’s 100-yard Breaststroke and men’s 200-yard Butterfly. A total of 20 GLVC records were set at the 2015 meet in Crawfordsville.
Drury sophomore Zuzanna Chwadeczko broke former Panther Agniezka Ostrowska’s league record of 1:02.42 with a time of 1:02.33 to win the 100 Breast. It was her second straight win in the event having gone 1:03.51 last season.
Missouri S&T junior Miguel Chavez earned a new GLVC mark in the men’s 100 Breast with a time of 54.30, which eclipsed the 54.40 set by Drury’s Kacper Pelczynski in 2015.
The final conference mark established Friday came in the men’s 200 Butterfly as Truman State’s Will Shanel touched the pad in 1:48.77, besting the previous league mark of 1:47.80, set last year by Drury’s Stanislav Kuzmin.
Other event winners Friday included a pair of Drury seniors in Sarah Pullen in the 500 Free (4:54.22) and Gretchen Stein (2:04.21) in the 200 Butterfly. The GLVC title marked the third straight in the event for Pullen and back-to-back crowns for Stein.
Missouri S&T junior Jonathan Glaser went 4:25.75 to win the men’s 500 Free, while Truman State’s Evyn Spencer (54.95) and UMSL’s Diogo Dias (49.33) scored victories in the women’s and men’s 100 Back, respectively. Dias’ win represented the first GLVC title for an UMSL swimmer since the Tritons revived their program last season.
In the nightcap, the Truman State women (7:29.26) and Missouri S&T men (6:33.06) scored victories in the 800 Free Relay.
Earlier in the day, Drury senior Rebekah Laupp earned back-to-back three-peats in GLVC diving as she garnered her third straight 1-meter title after securing her third consecutive 3-meter title on Thursday. Laupp, who was named GLVC Women’s Diver of the Year, netted 439.75 points on the 1-meter board in the win. On the men’s side, UIndy’s Dalton Cline earned GLVC Men’s Diver of the Year accolades after sweeping both titles with a 3-meter crown Friday, and doing so in record-breaking fashion. After setting a new GLVC standard on the 1-meter with a score of 476.95, Cline amassed 517.35 points on the 3-meter, which broke the previous league record of 477.35, which was shared by Drury’s Jesse Allard and UIndy’s Tyler Offutt in 2014.
All first- and second-place finishers are awarded first- and second-team All-GLVC honors, respectively.
Day four of the GLVC Championships begins Saturday with preliminaries of the 100 Free, 200 Back, and 200 Breast at 10:30 a.m. ET.
