CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – Two-time defending Great Lakes Valley Conference champion Drury University became three-time defending champions after winning the 2016 GLVC Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships at the Crawfordsville Aquatic Center in Crawfordsville, Indiana, Saturday night.
The Panthers recorded a come-from-behind victory after sitting in second place following the second and third days of competition. They recorded a final score of 792.5 points to earn the crown, besting runner-up Missouri S&T (761.5) by 31 points for the closest margin of victory in the sport’s three-year history.
The University of Indianapolis followed in third place with 683 points, while Lewis University (401) was fourth and Truman State University (392) finished fifth. In sixth place was William Jewell College (356), the University of Missouri-St. Louis came in seventh with 260 points, while Bellarmine University (144) and Maryville University (34) rounded out the field of nine teams.
After 20 GLVC Championship records were set last year, a combined 18 league marks were broken in both men's and women's competition this week, all of which were seen during 24 hours of live and free coverage on the GLVC Sports Network. Two of those marks were surpassed today, including in the 200 Breaststroke (1:56.99) and 200 Backstroke (1:45.80). Missouri S&T junior Miguel Chavez broke his own 200 Breast record from last year by .81 seconds to earn the gold, while UIndy freshman Rodrigo Codo Berti was 1.08 seconds faster in the 200 Back than the record set in 2015 to win himself a gold medal.
Five other GLVC champions were crowned Saturday, including Drury’s Alex Reinbrecht in the 1650-yard Freestyle (15:33.31), S&T’s Keith Sponsler who swam 44.19 in the 100-yard Freestyle, and the Miners’ 400-yard Freestyle Relay (2:57.98) that was anchored by Sponsler.
At the conclusion of the championship meet, Truman State sophomore Will Shanel was named GLVC Swimmer of the Year, Indianapolis’ Vitor Botana was voted Freshman of the Year and Missouri S&T head coach Doug Grooms was selected by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year for the third time.
All first- and second-place finishers are awarded first- and second-team All-GLVC honors, respectively.
