GLVCSN: Match Play Semfinals Front 9 | Match Play Semifinals Back 9Match Play Finals/Awards

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – For the second time in program history, and in as many years, the University of Missouri-St. Louis has earned a Great Lakes Valley Conference title in the sport of men’s golf.  The Tritons closed out the season with a win over the University of Indianapolis Tuesday afternoon at the GLVC Championships, contested at Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, Illinois.

The top-seeded Tritons completed the back-to-back effort by defeating a team in No. 2 Indianapolis that had conquered the same feat two years prior (2013 and 2014). UMSL advanced to its battle with UIndy after knocking off No. 4 University of Illinois Springfield in the semifinals this morning.

In the title bout, both UIndy and UMSL came out strong, tying in the first head-to-head battle before UMSL won match two and another tie resulted from the third matchup.

Colby Yates was UMSL’s leadoff man in the finals for the second year in a row as he faced off with UIndy’s Zach Gurtner, each carding a one-under-par 71 for the 0.5-0.5 tie score to open. Anthony Cope gave UMSL the 1.5-0.5 advantage in match two, defeating Andrew VanAelst 71-73.

The second tie came between UMSL’s Markus Lindberg and UIndy’s Christopher Heck, who each turned in a par 72, which pulled the Hounds within a point at 2-1. That followed with a one-stroke victory for UMSL’s James Henderson (71) over UIndy’s Evan Stoker in the fourth match and ultimately securing the team title with a 3-1 lead before scores for the fifth match came in.

Heavyweights Julien de Poyen and individual champion Graham McAcree were the last two off the course, and it was de Poyen who came away with the final point, beating McAree 70-71 for the final 4-1 score line.

Despite the lopsided final score, this title round was one of the most competitive in recent history as six contenders shot under par, three were even and just one was a single stroke over par through the final 18 holes.

Earlier in the day, UMSL and UIndy advanced to the match play finals by respectively defeating UIS 4-1 and No. 3 Bellarmine University 3-2.
