GLVCSN: Round 3 / Awards Ceremony

Championship Central

WATERLOO, Ill. – The University of Indianapolis carded a league-record 294 to post a 54-hole winning score of 899 (302-303-294) Sunday to earn its fifth-straight and 10th overall Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Golf Championship, which are also new league standards.

The Greyhounds had shot 75 or under in five of the 10 scores posted during the first two rounds, but put all five players at or below that mark on a beautiful 81-degree day at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Illinois.

In addition to the new GLVC-record low round, which was set by UIndy with a final round 296 to clinch the 2012 GLVC title, the Greyhounds also improved 13 strokes on their winning score of 912 from last year. The 2015 event marked the first time the league expanded its postseason event to 54 holes.

The University of Missouri-St. Louis finished second overall at 920 (311-304-305), followed by the University of Southern Indiana (316-308-308) and University of Illinois Springfield (310-313-309) in a tie for third at 932. Lewis University was fifth at 945 (322-312-311).

William Jewell College (323-320-316—959) placed sixth overall, Drury University (324-315-331—970), Bellarmine University (330-324-318—972) and Maryville University (331-331-319—981) were seventh through ninth, respectively, while Truman State University (333-330-334—997) finished 10th.  Rounding out the 14-team field was McKendree University (345-337-318—1000), Quincy University (349-332-338—1019), Rockhurst University (345-353-344—1042) and Saint Joseph’s College (372-380-354—1106).

After a pair of USI Screaming Eagles captured medalist honors the past two years, a pair of Greyhounds shared the Conference crown this year for the first time ever. Freshman Katharina Keilich (73-74-74—221) and sophomore Kylie Raines (74-75-72—221) became the first teammates in GLVC history to tie for medalist honors and, when given the choice, opted to forgo the medalist playoff and share the league title.

This is the fourth occasion that a Greyhound has captured the GLVC title. Amy Wenning earned the 2001 crown, Kristi Piepenbrink was the 2009 winner, and Regan Pittard finished first in 2013.

Sophomore Paxton DeHaven (75-76-74—225), an All-Conference honoree, was joined on the winning squad by seniors Molly Ward (80-81-74—235) and Brooke Beegle (83-78-75—236), who respectively placed tied for 14th and 17th overall.

DeHaven tied for third individually with Lewis junior Rachel Sweeney (79-75-71—225) and William Jewell sophomore Alex Trask (76-74-75—225) to garner All-GLVC distinction. Sweeney joined UMSL sophomore Stefaniya Ivanova with a 1-under-par 71 in the final round – the two lone under-par rounds of the event.

The top-five finishers of the Championship automatically earned a spot on the All-GLVC First Team. The other five players on the 10-member All-GLVC team, as well as Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year will be voted on by league coaches and announced next week.
