EAST PEORIA, Ill. – In the quarterfinal round of the 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament, three of the four higher seeded teams advanced to Saturday’s semifinal matches, which will be held in East Peoria, Ill., at the EastSide Centre.

No. 3 Rockhurst University got the first round of matches started with a four-set win over No. 6 University of Missouri-St. Louis, 3-1. The Hawks did it in comeback fashion, falling 25-21 in the first set before closing out the match with a 10-point advantage in the last one, 25-15. Rockhurst won the second and third frame, 25-23 and 25-22, respectively.

No. 2 McKendree University won the second quarterfinal contest over No. 7 Truman University in straight sets, 3-0, to avenge two previous losses to the Bulldogs in the 2014 and 2016 title match. The Bearcats picked up a 25-21 victory to begin and was able to sneak out the second-set win, 26-24. They sealed their fate in frame three by two points at 25-23. With the defending champs knocked out of the tournament, a new GLVC Champion will be crowned.

No. 5 University of Illinois Springfield, in its first postseason event since joining Division II and the GLVC, handed No. 4 Bellarmine University a five-set upset, 3-2. In the most thrilling match of the day, by far, the early momentum was in the Knights’ favor, as they won the first set 25-23. It was the Prairie Stars who answered with an identical 25-23 win in frame two to tie things up at 1-1. After the intermission, UIS went ahead 2-1 with a 25-21 victory before the best set of the day ensued. Bellarmine held the early 5-1 edge and another 13-10 lead at the halfway mark of the fourth set that forced a UIS timeout. The Prairie Stars got the first point after they talked it over and eventually took a 17-15 lead thanks to a 6-1 run, which they held onto until the Knights tied it at 23 and ultimately went ahead 25-24. Neither team pulled away for more than a one-point advantage after that until Bellarmine got the 32-30 win in the end. The fifth and final set, however, went to UIS 15-7, as it seemed Bellarmine had run out of steam. Aside from a 5-5 tie in the final frame, UIS held the lead for the duration and capped off its win with the last seven points.

No. 1 Lewis closed out the night with ease in its 3-0 sweep of No. 8 University of Indianapolis. The Flyers held the Greyhounds to under 20 points in all three sets, winning 25-12, 25-16, 25-19. Lewis used its fifth-best hitting game at .337 to overwhelm UIndy, which hit just 0.95. The Flyers will now look to win its league-best 10th GLVC tournament title.

No. 2 McKendree will face No. 3 Rockhurst on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 2:30 p.m. Central Time in the first of two semifinal matches. No. 1 Lewis will follow against No. 5 Illinois Springfield at 5:30 p.m. to conclude the semifinal round.
