INDIANAPOLIS – No. 7 seed University of Southern Indiana and No. 4 seed University of Indianapolis will compete for the 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Soccer Championship on Sunday, Nov. 5 at Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. Southern Indiana upset No. 3 Lewis University in a penalty kicks, 4-1, after each team tallied one goal through 110 minutes of action, while the fourth-seeded Greyhounds earned a 1-0 win to defeat No. 8 Missouri S&T.
In the first of two semifinal games, it wasn’t until the 73rd minute that a goal was marked on the scoreboard thanks to senior Nico Mueller notching his 13th goal of the season for Lewis’ late advantage. Exactly 90 seconds later, USI sophomore Adam Becker scored his first goal this year to tie things up. In the shootout, senior goalkeeper Adam Zehme wasn’t quite ready to end his career, making two stops on PKs to lead the Screaming Eagles to their 10th championship match in program history but first since 2002.
In the nightcap, the Miners created more chances than the Greyhounds, finishing with a slight 18-14 edge in shots with eight corner kicks to five; however, it was UIndy that came through with the only goal of the game, getting the first-half finish from sophomore Javier Steinwascher at 24:21 to seal a repeat appearance in the league title tilt.
