INDIANAPOLIS – No. 4 University of Indianapolis used a 90th-minute goal to defeat No. 7 University of Southern Indiana and claim the 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Soccer Championship on Sunday, Nov. 5 at Carroll Stadium in Indianapolis. The Greyhounds earned redemption to nab their second Conference Championship title after falling in penalty kicks during the finals a year ago. Indianapolis’ first league title came in 2014 when it was the No. 6 seed.

Just when the entirety of Carroll Stadium thought the match was headed to overtime, UIndy sophomore midfielder Ben Rohder snuck the game-winner past previously impenetrable USI senior goalkeeper Adam Zehme with 44 seconds on the clock. UIndy’s ninth corner kick was curled in to the penalty spot and deflected back to the foot of junior forward Benjamin Sierra, who used a one-touch ball that found Rohder unmarked just inside the six-yard box for the finish. The sophomore also scored UIndy’s only goal in the 2016 championship match.

The Hounds edged the Screaming Eagles in shots with an astounding 24, putting 11 on frame, while USI put five of its 10 on goal. Zehme made 10 saves for USI, while UIndy junior Miles Palmer stopped five.

This is the first year NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer will utilize an automatic qualifier, and the No. 8 regionally-ranked Hounds (13-5-1) earned it for the GLVC. The Eagles (11-7-1) are not currently ranked in the region, but all teams will find out their fate in the NCAA postseason at 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time Monday during the live Selection Show on NCAA.com.
