INDIANAPOLIS – Drury University leads both the men's and women's races after the first of four days at the 2017 GLVC Swimming and Diving Championships thanks to four broken records set on Wednesday at the Crawfordsville Aquatic Center in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
The Panthers jumped out to a 25.5-point lead on the men’s side and a 19-point advantage in the women’s race, following opening night action.
On the men's side, Drury tallied 196 points Wednesday to best second-place Missouri S&T (170.5), which trailed the Panthers by only three points following the first day last year. University of Indianapolis is third in the race with 94.5 points, followed by Truman State University (88), Lewis University (70), William Jewell College (55), University of Missouri-St. Louis (50), McKendree University (45), and Bellarmine University (26).
Drury scored 203 points on the women’s side, while Truman State (184) and Indianapolis (104) sit second and third, respectively. William Jewell (92) and Lewis (60) are fourth and fifth, followed by Quincy University (56), Missouri-St. Louis (42), Bellarmine (26), McKendree (25) and Maryville (19).
Eight GLVC champions were crowned Wednesday, with four of those race winners setting new league standards.
The 1,000-yard Freestyle saw a new winner in 2017, as Drury freshman Erica Dahlgren won in GLVC-record time, finishing at 10:02.13, which bested former Panther Sarah Pullen’s previous league mark of 10:07.52 set at the 2016 meet. Pullen had won the first three gold medals in the event.
Dahlgren was joined by fellow Drury medalists and GLVC record breakers Konrad Stepien (9:04.66) in the men’s 1,000 Free and Bailey Nunn, who captured the 200-yard Individual Medley title with a time of 2:00.60.
Another Panther, Vera Johansson, touched first in the women’s 50 Free with a time of 23.37, while Missouri S&T’s Jon Glaser won the same race on the men’s side in 20.14.
UIndy’s Rodrigo Codo Berti, the Conference record holder in the 200 IM (1:48.24), won again in 1:48.41 to take the top spot on the podium.
In the 200-yard Medley Relay, the Drury men (1:29.19) and women (1:41.22) each touched the wall first, the latter of which did so in record fashion, breaking the previous league best of 1:42.08 held by the 2014 Drury squad.
All first- and second-place finishers are awarded first- and second-team All-GLVC honors, respectively.
Day two of the GLVC Championships begins Thursday with preliminaries of the 400 Individual Medley, 100 Butterfly, and 200 Free, beginning at 10:30 a.m. ET. Non-produced bonus coverage of the preliminaries will begin at 10:15 a.m. on the GLVC Sports Network, while full coverage begins at 1 p.m. for women's 3-meter and men's 1-meter diving, followed by swimming finals at 5:30 p.m.
