INDIANAPOLIS – Bellarmine University sophomore James Inman carded a final-round 2-under-par 72 Monday to earn medalist honors at the 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Men’s Golf Championship, which is being held at Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield, Missouri.
As a freshman last year, Inman finished runner-up by a shot at 4-under 212 (69-72-71). This year, however, Inman held on to win by a shot with a winning total of 3-under 213 (74-69-70), making him the first Knight to claim the GLVC crown since 1999 when Cory Kaufman beat teammate Jeremy Gerch in a playoff. In fact, similar to Inman, Kaufman was the runner-up at the conference meet in 1998 before he went on to win the 1999 crown.
University of Illinois Springfield’s Talon Supak, the reigning NCAA Midwest/Central Region Champion, finished second in the individual race at 2-under 214 (68-74-72). The University of Missouri-St Louis was represented by the next three golfers in the field, including third-place finisher Julien dePoyen (68-74-74--216) at even par, while Markus Lindberg (75-72-71) and Jose Acevedo (74-70-74) tied for fourth at 2-over 218, along with 2016 GLVC Champion Graham McAree of the University of Indianapolis.
The top-five finishers and ties were awarded All-GLVC distinction following the round. The remainder of the 10-member team, along with Player, Freshman and Coach of the Year, will be determined by a vote of the league coaches prior to NCAA Regionals.
On the team side, UMSL finished 7-over at 871 (288-292-291), seven shots ahead of UIndy at 878 (290-299-289), and garnered the No. 1 seed in Tuesday's medal/match play competition. Following second-place UIndy, Drury University (293-296-298—887) and Bellarmine University (300-293-296--889) also advanced to Tuesday’s medal/match semifinals.
No. 1 UMSL will square off against No. 4 Bellarmine at 8 a.m. off the No.1 tee, while No. 2 UIndy and No. 3 Drury will face eacth over on the No. 10 tee at 8 a.m.
