WATERLOO, Ill. – The University of Indianapolis holds a five-stroke lead after a Conference-record opening round of 292 Friday at the 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference Women’s Golf Championships, which is being held at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Illinois.
The University of Missouri-St. Louis sits second in the 14-team field at 297 as the only other team under 300 and within single digits of the Greyhounds. The University of Illinois Springfield is the next closest in third with its score of 310, while the University of Southern Indiana (315) is just five strokes back of the Prairie Stars and William Jewell College carded a 320 to round out the top five teams. Lewis University (329) and McKendree University (330) are separated by just one stroke for sixth and seventh, respectively, while Bellarmine University and Quincy University sit in a tie for eighth at 335. With a 336, Rockhurst University (336) follows in 10th and Truman State’s 337 is one back of the Hawks for 11th. Maryville University (342), Drury University (346) and St Joseph’s College (371) round out the 14-team field in 12th, 13th and 14th, respectively.
In the individual race, for the second year in a row, a UIndy freshman leads the pack after Pilar Echeverria fired a one-under-par 71. She is one stroke ahead of three players tied for second with par, including teammate Paxton DeHaven, Missouri-St. Louis’ Alexa Capesius and Southern Indiana’s Taylor Howerton. Two more are tied for fifth, as Triton teammates Maxi Roth and Stefaniya Ivanova both carded 1-over 73s. Defending co-medalist Kylie Raines of UIndy came in at seventh with a 74, while fellow co-medalist from last year Katharina Keilich shot a 75 to match USI’s Grace Davis for an eighth-place tie. Three others are tied for 10th place.
Due to inclement weather, and, in an attempt to play as many holes as possible, Saturday’s 18-hole round format has been changed to a 9:30 a.m. CT shotgun start with play to be completed by 7:30 p.m. Should the weather allow for completion of all 18 holes with time remaining, Round 3 will begin immediately and with the same pairings.
