WATERLOO, Ill. – The second round of the 2017 Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship was suspended Saturday evening due to severe thunderstorms in the area at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Illinois. Play will resume Sunday morning when possible.
Round 2 was slated to begin at 9:30 a.m. Central Time Saturday morning with a shotgun start; however, due to consistent lightning, the round did not begin until nearly 12:30 p.m. that afternoon. With shockingly dry weather and warm temperatures that reached the 70s, groups were able to complete about 10-13 holes before being called off the course around 3 p.m., as a new storm system moved in. Play was subsequently suspended for the day at approximately 5 p.m.
Indianapolis made it through 11-12 holes, shooting two-over par and sit at +6 for the event so far, which is eight ahead of Missouri-St. Louis that is +14 overall and +5 through 11-12. Illinois Springfield remains in third through 11-12 at +40 overall and +18 Saturday. William Jewell and Lewis round out the current top five within a single stroke of each other at +53 and +54, respectively.
Individually, UIndy's Pilar Echeverria holds the lead at even par after shooting a one-under-par 71 Friday and currently sits at +1 through 11. UMSL's Stefaniya Ivanova (thru 12) and Alexa Capesius (thru 11), along with UIndy's Paxton DeHaven (thru 11) are tied for second at +1, and defending co-champion of UIndy Katharina Keilich (thru 11) is fifth with a +2. Ivanova and teammate Emma Thorngren are each shooting par through 12, while Keilich and Lewis' Rachel Sweeney (thru 12) are -1.
Inclement weather is expected again Sunday, but the plan is for a 9 a.m. resumption of play; though the weather will dictate an exact start time. Should all 70 players complete their remaining holes from Round 2 with playable conditions still available, Round 3 will begin immediately and with the same pairings. If the players complete their remaining holes from Round 2 but playable conditions are not a reality, the championship will become official at 36 holes.
