WATERLOO, Ill. – The University of Indianapolis posted consecutive league-record, 18-hole scores of 292 to post a 36-hole, record-winning 584 to win its sixth consecutive, and 11th overall, Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship in 2017 at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Illinois.
This event was expanded from 36 holes to 54 holes in 2015 but was forced to revert back to 36 due to severe weather that plagued the area for the majority of the weekend. Despite daily bleak forecasts, the course staff tended the grounds and Mother Nature allowed just enough windows of opportunity to get through the required 36 holes and make this an official championship.
Soaked tee boxes, standing water and bunkers-turned-ponds, the Greyhounds didn’t let the conditions faze them. They turned in two identical record rounds of 292, which included a split second round that started Saturday and ended Sunday because play was suspended when teams were just 10-13 holes through the round.
The University of Missouri-St. Louis finished second overall at 593 (297-296), followed by the University of Illinois Springfield (310-318–628), Lewis University (329-310–639) and University of Southern Indiana (315-327–642) that rounds out the top-five teams. William Jewell College (320-324–644) was sixth, Truman State University (337-326–663) finished seventh, McKendree University (330-337–667) placed eighth and Quincy University (335-333–668) came in ninth. Drury University (346-324–670) made the largest improvement from Round 1 to Round 2 to place in a tie for 10th with Bellarmine University (335-335–670). Rounding out the 14-team field was Rockhurst University (336-339–675), Maryville University (342-356–698) and Saint Joseph’s College (371-365–736).
After a pair of UIndy Greyhounds captured co-medalist honors last year, a new Hound took home the trophy in 2017 as junior Paxton DeHaven won by playing two rounds of par golf, carding consecutive 72s for a 144.
This is the fifth occasion that a Greyhound has captured the GLVC title. Amy Wenning earned the 2001 crown, Kristi Piepenbrink was the 2009 winner, Regan Pittard finished first in 2013 while Kylie Raines and Katharina Keilich finished as co-medalists in 2016.
DeHaven, an All-Conference honoree along with all of her teammates, was joined on the winning squad by freshman Pilar Echeverria (71-74–145) who tied for runner-up. In addition, the newcomer was one of just two players to shoot a sub-par round with her Round 1 71, while junior Raines placed fourth with two rounds of 74 (148). Sophomore Keilich (75-74–149) and junior Annika Haynes (77-72–149) finished in a tie for fifth.
UMSL’s Alexa Capesius (72-73–145) tied with Echeverria for second, while Lewis’ Rachel Sweeney (79-71–150) was the other one-under golfer, shooting her 71 in the two-day Round 2 for a finish in eighth.
The top-five finishers – and in this year’s case, because of ties, the top-seven – of the Championship automatically earned a spot on the All-GLVC First Team. The other three players on the 10-member All-GLVC team, as well as Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year will be voted on by league coaches and announced next week.
