RENSSELAER, IN - Lewis University captured its second consecutive and record eighth Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Outdoor Track & Field Championship Saturday at Saint Joseph's College in Rensselaer, Indiana.

The Flyers netted 194 points for the victory, while the University of Indianapolis (118 points) and McKendree University (117) finished second and third, respectively.  Bellarmine University scored a fourth-place result with 114, followed by Missouri S&T (68), Truman State University (67), Maryville University (49) and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (26).  Rounding out the field were William Jewell College (24) and University of Southern Indiana (24) tied for ninth, Saint Joseph’s (13) in 11th and the University of Illinois Springfield (4) in 12th.

Following the event, Bellarmine’s Meghan Roby and UIndy’s Katie Monk were named the GLVC Outdoor Track Athlete and Field Athlete of the Week, respectively.  Lewis newcomer Allie Heinzer was named GLVC Freshman of the Year, while her mentor Dana Schwarting was voted GLVC Coach of the Year by his peers.

In addition, the league also recognized 14 GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award nominees. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced later this month.
