Tournament Bracket
INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference released late Wednesday night the bracket for the 2018 GLVC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament. Truman State University earned the top seed in the eight-team tournament and will serve as one of four hosts in the tournament's opening-round contests, which take place this Sunday, Oct. 28. No. 2 McKendree University, No. 3 University of Southern Indiana and No. 4 Quincy University will also host quarterfinal action.
Top-seeded Truman State finished with a 9-3-1 (.731) Conference record to capture a three-way share of the Regular Season Championship, which accounts for its third since joining the league in 2013. The Bulldogs, despite being in a three-way tie for first, secured the No. 1 seed based on its 2-0 record against McKendree and Southern Indiana. At 13-3-1 overall, Truman will make its sixth consecutive appearance in the GLVC Championship Tournament when it hosts No. 8 Lewis University (9-6-2, 8-5 GLVC, .615) on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT in Kirksville, Missouri. Lewis, which lost a head-to-head tiebreaker versus Rockhurst, earned its seventh berth in the event but first since 2015. The Bulldogs will be looking for some redemption in this matchup, as the Flyers opened the league slate Sept. 14 with a 2-1 road win at Truman.
No. 2 McKendree (13-3-1, 9-3-1, .731), which is set to make its fourth consecutive postseason trip and fifth overall, will play host to No. 7 Rockhurst University (9-7-1, 8-5, .615) in Lebanon, Illinois, on Sunday for a quarterfinal matchup at a time to be determined. The Hawks make a return to the championship for the 13th time in 14 years after missing out last season. The Bearcats claimed the second seed behind Truman, but ahead of USI, due to its 1-2 record against the two teams, while Rockhurst won a head-to-head tiebreaker with Lewis to nab the seventh spot. The Bearcats share the GLVC Regular Season title with Truman and USI and have earned back-to-back Championship crowns the last two tournaments. They will look to repeat their 1-0 win over Rockhurst from just last week on Oct. 21 in Lebanon.
Third-seeded Southern Indiana (11-5-2, 9-3-1, .731) welcomes No. 6 Maryville (9-4-3, 8-4-1, .654) to Evansville, Indiana, Sunday for a 12 p.m. CT kickoff. The Screaming Eagles settled for the No. 3 seed due to its 0-2 mark against Truman and McKendree, while the Saints were tied with Bellarmine head-to-head but gave up the fifth seed to the Knights thanks to their tie with Truman – a contest that Maryville lost. This is USI’s 13th bid to the Conference tournament and third-straight, but it’s the Eagles first-ever Regular Season Championship title, which it shares with Truman and McKendree. The Saints have advanced to the GLVC postseason event the last two seasons. Earlier on Oct. 12, USI topped Maryville 3-1 at home.
No. 4 Quincy (10-5-2, 8-3-2, .692) returns to the postseason for its league-best 20th trip and has appeared in the GLVC Championship Tournament every season since 2006. The Hawks will battle No. 5 Bellarmine University (9-5-3, 7-3-3, .654) at a time to be determined in Quincy, Illinois – a rematch of the Sept. 28 contest in which the Knights bested Quincy, 2-1, at home. Bellarmine captured the fifth seed after tying with Maryville head-to-head but coming out on top due to its tie with Truman – a contest Maryville lost. The Knights are making their 17th GLVC Championship Tournament appearance and 11th in a row.
Each of the four quarterfinal winners will advance to the GLVC Championship Tournament semifinals, which will be hosted for the third time in the sport’s history at a neutral site by the GLVC, but this year features a new venue at the Woehrle Athletic Complex in Jeffersonville, Ind. The two semifinal contests will be played at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. ET Friday, Nov. 2, while the 2018 GLVC Championship Tournament final will take place Sunday, Nov. 4 at 3 p.m. Last year, second-seeded McKendree captured the 2017 GLVC Championship with a 3-0 win past No. 1 Quincy.
