EAST PEORIA, Ill. – In the quarterfinal round of the 2018 Great Lakes Valley Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament, the four higher seeded teams advanced to Friday’s semifinal matches, which are being held in East Peoria, Ill., at the EastSide Centre.

No. 3 University of Illinois Springfield got the first round of matches started with a four-set win over No. 6 Bellarmine University, 3-1. The Prairie Stars had no trouble in the first set, winning 25-13, but the Knights got one back in set two, 25-19. The third frame was much closer but ultimately went the way of UIS, 25-23, before the Stars repeated their first-set performance for the 25-13 fourth-set win. UIS had the advantage in hitting percentage with its second-highest mark of the season at .364 and edged Bellarmine in all other major statistical categories. This is UIS’s second-ever postseason and second trip to the semifinal round.

No. 2 Drury University won the second quarterfinal contest over No. 7 McKendree University in straight sets, 3-0, to move on to the semifinals for the first time in program history. The Panthers picked up a 25-21 victory to begin and were able to sneak out the second-set win, 28-26. They sealed their fate in frame three by four points at 25-21. The two teams were level in assists (43) and digs (48) while McKendree had the edge in aces (4-3) and kills (46-45) and Drury led 13 blocks to seven.

No. 4 Rockhurst University matched Drury’s effort with the second consecutive sweep of the day, beating No. 5 University of Indianapolis, 3-0. The Hawks picked up set one 25-19, won set two 25-17, and finished off the deciding set 25-19. They were led by Alyssa Woodman’s double-double of 11 kills and 12 digs to go along with a .321 hitting percentage, which helped the squad to a solid .304 clip. Rockhurst will play in its fourth-straight semifinal match.

No. 1 Lewis University and No. 8 Truman State University saved the best for last, treating fans to two hours of exciting volleyball, as the Bulldogs stunned the Flyers in the opening set, 25-20. Lewis fought back in the second frame to win by a narrow 25-23 mark before turning in its own 25-20 victory in the third. Truman took Lewis to task in the fourth set, forcing extra points, but Lewis pulled out the win 26-24 to survive and advance to its fourth semifinal in a row and keeping its hopes of defending last year’s GLVC title alive.

No. 2 Drury will face No. 3 Illinois Springfield on Friday, Nov. 9 at 2:30 p.m. Central Time in the first of two semifinal matches. No. 1 Lewis will follow against No. 4 Rockhurst at 5:30 p.m. to conclude the semifinal round.
