CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – After leading wire-to-wire through four days of competition, the Drury University women’s swimming and diving team earned its fourth league title in five years after breaking five records at the Crawfordsville Aquatic Center in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

The Panthers took the victory with 898.5 points, 142.5 ahead of runner-up University of Indianapolis (756.5). Truman State University claimed the third spot with 655 points, while McKendree University took fourth (366). William Jewell College rounded out the top-five teams with 290 points. Bellarmine University placed sixth (251), University of Missouri-St. Louis (227) came in seventh, while Lewis University (207) and Maryville University (100) placed ninth.

A total of 17 records were broken at the 2018 championship meet among the men’s and women’s races, including four on the final day. Sophomore Erica Dahlgren broke two of them and also won gold in three individual events and was part of one relay win, en route to being voted GLVC Swimmer of the Year by the league’s head coaches. Head coach Brian Reynolds shared Coach of the Year honors with McKendree’s Jimmy Tierney, who were both voted as such by their peers. It bears noting that under Tierney’s watch, the Bearcats made a marked improvement in their second league meet after finishing last in the event a year ago.

Dahlgren’s 1,650-yard Freestyle Conference record began the evening session, as she touched first in 16:48.62 for a NCAA Division II “B” Standard. Senior teammate Zuza Chwadeczki followed in the 100-yard Free, recording a winning time of 49.80, which was also a NCAA B-cut. Drury closed out the night with a win in the 400-yard Free Relay, setting a new Conference and Pool record (3:22.40) that was good enough for a B-cut as well.
The other swimmers who earned gold medals on the final day of competition included freshman Stephanie Palczynski from Lewis with a 2:00.06 in the 200-yard Backstroke, along with GLVC Freshman of the Year Natalie Galluzzo of Truman State, who clocked a 2:14.79 in the 200-yard Breaststroke.

All first- and second-place finishers are awarded first- and second-team All-GLVC honors, respectively.

The league also recognized nine GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award nominees and one team award winner. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
