CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – The University of Indianapolis men’s swimming and diving team earned its first-ever league title after making a comeback following the first day of action before building an unreachable lead after Day 2 at the Crawfordsville Aquatic Center in Crawfordsville, Indiana, Feb. 7-10.

The Greyhounds took the victory with 845 points, 150 ahead of four-time champion and first-time runner-up Drury University (695). Missouri S&T claimed the third spot with 574.5 points, while McKendree University (405) and Truman State University (364) placed fourth and fifth, respectively. William Jewell College (340) took sixth and Lewis University placed seventh with 207 points. University of Missouri-St. Louis (195) was eighth, Bellarmine University (103) took ninth and Maryville University (50.5) rounded out the 10-team field.

A total of 17 records were broken at the 2018 championship meet among the men’s and women’s races, including four on the final day, as 11 were broken by the men’s squads overall.

UIndy junior Rodrigo Codo Berti was named GLVC Swimmer of the Year by a vote of the head coaches after breaking two individual Conference and Pool records and helping the Hounds do the same in the 400 medley relay. His record of 1:45.31 in the 200-yard Backstroke today, along with swimming lead-off in the championship’s last race to help capture gold in the 400-yard Freestyle Relay, capped off an impressive four-day performance. Teammate Hector Gomez was also a major award winner, garnering GLVC Freshman of the Year distinction, thanks to his bronze medal-effort in the 400-yard Individual Medley (3:55.66) and as part of the 800-yard Free Relay team. Their head coach, Jason Hite, was voted by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year to make it a clean sweep of the major postseason honors, as sophomore Josh Zylstra clinched Diver of the Year on Thursday.

Other Saturday winners included Missouri S&T sophomore Tim Samuelsen with a GLVC- and Pool-record 15:20.15 in the 1,650-yard Free, along with UIndy junior Guilherme Zavaneli’s Conference standard in the 100-yard Free (44.03). Drury’s Andrea Bazzoli also captured gold in the 200-yard Breaststroke (1:57.96). Every one of the men’s times today were NCAA Division II “B” Standards.

All first- and second-place finishers are awarded first- and second-team All-GLVC honors, respectively.

The league also recognized nine GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award nominees and one team award winner. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
