INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis has captured the 2018 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Indoor Track and Field Championship, which concluded Sunday night at the Athletics & Recreation Center on the campus of UIndy.

The Greyhounds ended Lewis University’s four-year streak of conference crowns by producing a winning total of 133.50 points, more than 21 points ahead of the runner-up Flyers.  Missouri S&T was third with 94 points, followed by McKendree University (84), University of Southern Indiana (59.5), Bellarmine University (59), Maryville University (16), Truman State University (13), and the University of Illinois Springfield (9) in the top 10.  Drury University (6) and William Jewell College (3) were 11th and 12th, respectively, while Quincy University did not hit the scoreboard.  Due to Conference sanctions, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside was ineligible for the league title and was not officially scored at the meet.

Perhaps it was fitting that UIndy put an end to the Flyers’ drive for five titles as it was Lewis back in 2014 that put a halt to UIndy’s four-peat of conference titles from 2010-13.  The Greyhounds now own five GLVC indoor titles, which are tied with Lewis for the most conference crowns in league history.

Among the notable performances achieved on Sunday, McKendree junior DeMontez McCray picked up the 60- (6.82) and 200-meter (21.76) sprint wins, while teammate Jacob Troutman secured the triple jump title with a leap of 14.54 meters.  UIndy junior Brian Sales successfully defended his 400-meter crown in 23.59, Treyvon Matthews felly just .02 shy of the GLVC record but earned the win in the 60-meter hurdles in 7.95 seconds, and junior DeAndrew Bluitt cleared 2.06 meters for the high jump win.  After winning the weight throw on Saturday, UIndy’s Austin Hogan made it a clean sweep in the throw cage by scoring his second straight win in the shot put with a heave of 17.29 meters.  The Greyhounds sealed their fifth GLVC title with a win in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:25.57.

USI put three finishers in the top four of the mile, but it was freshman Javan Winders outkicking senior Bastian Grau by .02 with a winning time of 4:20.65.  Their teammate Austin Nolan – the 2017 GLVC Cross Country champion – earned the 3,000-meter title with an effort of 8:35.64.  It was the second straight distance win for Nolan as he picked up the 5,000-meter title on Saturday. Lewis senior Bryce Holesinger set a new GLVC record in the heptathlon with a total of 5,053 points.  In fact, Missouri S&T sophomore Ezekiel Buck also broke the previous league best with 5,046 points, just seven markers shy of Holesinger.  Lewis sophomore John Partee earned the 800-meter championship in 1:56.06.

At the conclusion of the GLVC Championship, the men’s coaches selected McKendree’s McCray to his second stint as GLVC Indoor Track Athlete of the Year.  The Greyhounds swept the remaining individual awards as Hogan retained his GLVC Field Athlete of the Year accolade, Brady Walden was named GLVC Freshman of the Year, and UIndy mentor Scott Fangman was honored with GLVC Coach of the Year distinction.

The league also recognized its annual team and individual honorees for the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award. UIndy was voted as the team winner this season, while the 13 individuals are listed below. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
