INDIANAPOLIS – The Missouri S&T men’s program and the University of Indianapolis women’s team lead after the first day of the 2018 Great Lakes Valley Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, which are being held at the Athletics & Recreation Center (ARC) on the campus of UIndy.
Missouri S&T paces the men’s contest with 40 points, followed by Lewis University in second (34), Indianapolis (23) in third, Bellarmine University (21) and the University of Southern Indiana (18) in the top five. Rounding out the field is McKendree University (10), Maryville University (8), University of Illinois Springfield (7) and Truman State University.
On the women’s side, UIndy owns 42 points, while Lewis (35), Bellarmine (30) and McKendree (28) are in the top four, followed by William Jewell (14) and Southern Indiana (14) in a tie for fifth. Drury (10) is seventh after the first day, Truman State takes eighth with six points, Missouri S&T has four points and Maryville is in 10th with three points.
Representing Lewis, Cierra Pulliam had a productive night by winning the women’s long jump in a new GLVC record leap of 6.04 meters, which beat Lewis’ Phoenix Smallwood’s previous mark of 5.95 meters from a year ago. Pulliam also set a new league record in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 7.63 in the preliminaries.
Another GLVC record was set in the preliminary rounds as Bellarmine senior Meghan Roby crossed the line in 24.50 seconds in the 200 meter dash, which topped her previous-best league mark of 24.66 that earned her the league crown in 2017.
Southern Indiana’s Hope Jones successfully defended her conference title in the 5,000 meters. She finished in 17:19.97, meeting NCAA provisional qualifying standards as well. Jones scored an 18-second victory over 2017 GLVC Cross Country champion Claire McCune of Drury.
In the men’s 5,000 meters, USI’s Austin Nolan – the 2017 GLVC Cross Country Champion – added to his experience with a winning time of 15:08.78.
Bellarmine was six seconds off its GLVC record and winning time of 11:51.69 in the women’s distance medley relay.
UIndy’s Katie Monk shattered the GLVC record in the women’s weigh throw, heaving the implement in 19.93 meters, which shattered the previous mark by Indianapolis’ Cari Roush (18.30). With a toss of 19.68 meters, UIndy’s Austin Hogan defended his title in the men’s weight throw.
Missouri S&T senior Lucas Rosenbaum finished in a three-way tie for first in the men’s pole vault, but with no misses at 4.81 meters, he was crowned GLVC Champion.
In other action, UW-Parkside’s Tavian Stweart and Trevaughn Brown went 1-2 in the long jump, while the Rangers earned a win in the men’s DMR in 10:13.95.
In the pentathlon, McKendree senior Jordyn Looman earned the GLVC title with a winning total of 3,350.
Sunday’s docket opens with the conclusion of the men’s heptathlon, which is currently being led by Lewis senior Bryce Holesinger a time of 2721.
In Sunday’s field events, the men will compete in the finals of the high jump, triple jump and shot put, while the women will crown winners in the high jump, triple jump, shot put and pole vault.
Running events commence at 1:30 p.m. ET with the mile and 60-meter hurdles. The 60-, 200-, 400-, 800-, 3,000-meter races will also take place before the event concludes with the 4x400-meter relay.
