INDIANAPOLIS – Drury University leads both the men's and women's races after the first of four days at the 2018 GLVC Swimming and Diving Championships thanks to four broken records set on Wednesday at the Crawfordsville Aquatic Center in Crawfordsville, Indiana.

The Panthers jumped out to a narrow nine-point lead on the men’s side and a 38-point advantage in the women’s race, following opening night action.

For the men, Drury tallied 154 points Wednesday to best second-place Missouri S&T (145), which trailed the Panthers by 19.5 points following the first day last year. University of Indianapolis is a very close third in the race with 143 points, followed by Truman State University (89), McKendree University (78), William Jewell College (59), University of Missouri-St. Louis (36), Lewis University (35), Bellarmine University (22), and Maryville (14).

Drury scored 185 points on the women’s side, while Indianapolis (147) and Truman State (130) sit second and third, respectively. McKendree (68) and Missouri-St. Louis (60) respectively follow in fourth and fifth, while Bellarmine (54), William Jewell (31), and Lewis (10) are sixth through eighth. Maryville has yet to score.

Eight GLVC champions were crowned Wednesday, with five of those race winners setting new league standards.

The 1,000-yard Freestyle saw Drury sophomore and 2017 co-Freshman of the Year, Erica Dahlgren, break her own GLVC record (10:02.13) by over 6 seconds with a new time of 9:55.69, which also marked a new pool standard for the first time since 2014 by just over 4 seconds (9:59.84). Not only did she break two records, she also met a NCAA ‘A’-cut Qualifying Standard.

Another Drury sophomore and the 2017 male Freshman of the Year, Joan Casanovas, also broke the 1,000 Free record by .04 seconds to capture a new pool mark of his own in a time of 9:04.62, meeting the NCAA ‘A’ Standard.

Another Panther, senior Zuzanna Chwadeczko, touched first in the women’s 200 Individual Medley with a time of 2:00.67 (NCAA B-cut), while UIndy junior Rodrigo Codo Berti broke his 200 IM GLVC standard from 2016 by just less than one second, touching the wall at 1:47.81 (B-cut) to set a new pool record for the first time since 2007, as well.

In the women’s 50 Free, Drury senior Vera Johansson clocked a winning time of 23.14 (B-cut), while McKendree sophomore Matija Pucarevic won the first-ever gold medal for a Bearcats swimmer with a time of 20.25 (B-cut) in the men’s 50 Free.

In the 200-yard Medley Relay, the Drury men (1:28.14) and women (1:40.53) each touched the wall first in NCAA Provisional Standard times, breaking the previous league bests of 1:28.70 (UIndy, 2016) and 1:41.22 (Drury, 2017).

All first- and second-place finishers are awarded first- and second-team All-GLVC honors, respectively.
