There were 12 GLVC champions crowned Thursday, with four of those winners setting new league standards.
The medal ceremonies began with an afternoon of diving where Indianapolis sophomore Josh Zylstra set the first GLVC record of the day with 509.10 points on the men’s 1-Meter boards. In fact, the reigning Diver of the Year led a Greyhounds’ sweep on the medal podium for 53 points, as last year’s gold medalist Payton Staman (483.50) got the silver and Casey Crawford (316.45) earned bronze. UIndy also went 1-2 on the women’s 3-Meter board with Hounds newcomer Cassandra Kury (409.35) winning gold and junior Chloe Jones (351.35) picking up silver. Additionally, McKendree freshman Caitlyn Canadi (324.60) won the first women’s diving medal in Bearcat history with her bronze-medal performance.
The evening swimming finals started with the women’s 200 Freestyle Relay in which Drury clocked a time of 1:33.49 – a NCAA Division II ‘B’-cut Qualifying Standard – for the gold, while the McKendree men followed with a winning time of 1:20.96 in the same event for its own B-cut mark.
In the 400 Individual Medley, Bearcats freshman Karlie Rimat touched first at 4:25.23, before Truman State senior Will Shanel won his fourth-straight gold medal in the event (3:53.16). Both clips met the D-II B-cut standard.
Next came the women’s 100 Butterfly that saw Drury’s Vera Johansson win with a time of 53.95 (B-cut) before sophomore teammate Pavel Semochkin won in record fashion, winning in 47.35 to beat his preliminary record clip of 47.58. His finals time was both a Conference and pool record.
Drury’s Erica Dahlgren won the 200 Free for the second consecutive year, bettering her 2017 time of 1:50.13 for the new 1:49.31 (B-cut) victory mark. In the ensuing men’s 200, Panthers teammate Joan Casanovas narrowly broke the previous league and pool record of 1:35.42 by touching the wall at 1:35.05 for a NCAA D-II A-cut Qualifying Standard.
Wrapping things up for the night was the 400 Medley Relay where the Drury women won again, recording the gold-medal time of 3:43.08 before the UIndy men broke their record from a year ago in the event. The Greyhounds swam to victory in 3:14.25, notching a new GLVC and pool standard, along with a B-cut mark.
All first- and second-place finishers are awarded first- and second-team All-GLVC honors, respectively.
