Defending Champion UIndy Leads GLVC Championship After Round One

EUREKA, Missouri – The University of Indianapolis holds a four-stroke advantage over the University of Missouri-St. Louis after an opening round of 296 Friday at the 2018 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Women’s Golf Championships, which is being held at Fox Run Golf Club in Eureka, Missouri.

UMSL finished the opening round with a 12-over-par 300, well ahead of the University of Illinois Springfield, which sits third at 313.  The Prairie Stars have a gap of their own ahead of fourth-place Truman State University, which fired a 328 in the opener.  Lewis University (336) and the University of Southern Indiana (337) are fifth and sixth, respectively, while McKendree University (337) is seventh.  William Jewell College (340), Drury University (343) and Missouri S&T (346) hold spots eighth through 10th, while Quincy University (347), Rockhurst University (350), Bellarmine University (360) and Maryville University (367) round out the 14-team field.

In the individual race, just four strokes separate the top 10 positions, led by UMSL’s Emma Thorngren and her even-par 72.  Three standouts are tied for second at 1-over 73, including Illinois Springfield’s Maria Espinosa, UIndy’s Annika Haynes, and Truman State’s Nicolle Barmettler.  UIndy teammates Pilar Echeverria, the 2017 GLVC Freshman and Player of the Year, and defending GLVC Champion Paxton DeHaven carded 2-over 74s in the opener.  The Greyhound tandem sits one stroke ahead of a three-way tie for seventh that includes teammate and 2016 co-GLVC Champion Katharina Keilich and UMSL’s Ares Boira and Alexa Capesius.  Bellarmine’s Katie Gathof rounds out the top 10 with a 4-over 76.  

Saturday’s 18-hole round will commence at 8 a.m. CT with the top nine teams teeing off No. 10, while teams ranked 10th through 14 will start on No. 1 beginning at 8:18 a.m.
