INDIANAPOLIS – Second-seeded University of Indianapolis won the inaugural Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Lacrosse Championship Tournament title on its home field at Key Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana, to become the league’s first titleholder in the sport in 2018.
UIndy met top-seeded and regular-season champion Young Harris College in the first-ever title tilt, coming away with the 12-8 upset on Sunday afternoon to avenge the 11-7 regular-season loss at Young Harris on March 17. In a tale of two halves, the Greyhounds also snapped the Mountain Lions’ 13-game win streak.
The unanimous preseason favorite Greyhounds pulled ahead early after answering the Mountain Lions’ opening goal with three of their own in a 90-second span, taking a 3-1 lead with 7:07 to go in the first quarter. YHC then scored three-straight to pull ahead 4-3 by quarter’s end. Both teams added two more goals apiece in the second frame for a 6-5 halftime score.
UIndy took a 7-6 lead in the second half by notching back-to-back goals within 37 seconds before YHC evened things up with 4:30 remaining in the period. The Greyhounds then recorded the next four goals, three of which came in the last 1:41 of the third frame and the other at the 14:42 mark of the fourth. Both teams would tally one more goal each for the final 12-8 result.
YHC’s Bruce Silk scored a hat trick for a game-high three goals and added one assist in the loss, while UIndy’s Matthew Johnson had one goal and two assists in the win. The Greyhound’s Dominic Guarino, who won a game-high 11 face-off attempts, also grabbed a game-best six ground balls.
