EUREKA, Missouri – The University of Indianapolis captured its seventh straight and 12th overall title in record fashion Sunday at the 2018 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Women’s Golf Championships, which was held at Fox Run Golf Club in Eureka, Missouri.
The Greyhounds fired a 1-under-par 287 in the final round to reset the school’s own GLVC record of 292, which was set twice in 2017. UIndy (296-303-287—886) also broke its own GLVC mark for 54 holes, besting its winning effort of 889 back in 2016. Additionally, the Greyhounds earned their title by 37 strokes to set the league’s new largest margin of victory, a mark previously held by Drury University when it scored a 32-stroke win over the University of Southern Indiana in 2005.
For just the second time in GLVC history, an individual won back-to-back medalist honors. UIndy senior Paxton DeHaven successfully defended her conference crown with a winning effort of 3-over 219 (74-74-71). DeHaven, who entered the final round tied for the individual lead, posted one of three sub-par rounds Sunday and netted her second straight medalist crown, which has not happened in the league since Lewis University’s Reeta Laakkonen won the first two conference titles in 1998 and 1999.
For the fourth consecutive season, the University of Missouri-St. Louis finished second in the 14-team field, as the Tritons finished with a total of 923 (300-314-309). The University of Illinois Springfield (313-318-325—956) placed third overall, followed by Southern Indiana (336-333-320—989) and Truman State University (328-342-330—1000) in the top five. Lewis (335-335-331—1001) and William Jewell College (340-343-318—1001) tied for sixth, followed by McKendree University (337-345-336—1018) and Drury (343-343-343—1029) in eighth and ninth, respectively. Rockhurst University (350-351-349—1050) and Missouri S&T (346-349-355—1050) tied for 10th, while Maryville University (367-344-345—1056), Bellarmine University (360-362-348—1070) and Quincy University (347-368-356—1071) rounded out the field.
Individually, DeHaven’s win also marks the third straight year a Greyhound has earned the conference crown, as she picked up her first win in 2017 after teammates Kylie Raines and Katharina Keilich tied for medalist honors in 2016. Three other Greyhounds joined DeHaven on the first half of the All-GLVC team, which goes to the top five finishers. Keilich (75-76-72—223) and Pilar Echeverria (74-79-70—223) tied for third, just one shot behind Truman State’s Nicolle Barmettler (73-78-71—222), who joined DeHaven and Echeverria under par in Sunday’s final round. UIndy’s Annika Haynes (73-75-79—227) finished fifth overall.
Three UMSL standouts finished in the top 10, including Emma Thorngren (72-77-79—228) in sixth and Stefaniya Ivanova (81-74-75—230), who tied UIndy’s Raines (78-78-74—230) for seventh. Illinois Springfield’s Maria Espinosa (73-79-79—231) was ninth and UMSL’s Ares Boira (75-84-74—233) was 10th.
The second half of the All-GLVC team and the major postseason awards will be determined by coaches voting this upcoming week and released prior to NCAA Regional play, May 7-9.
