OZARK, Mo. – For the first time since 2012, both of the “if necessary” games will be played to determine a champion in the 2018 Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Championship Tournament at U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark, Missouri. Three teams from the East Division will be in action, including Bellarmine, Indianapolis, and Southern Indiana, while Quincy will be the lone team out of the West.
No. 4E Indianapolis and No. 2 West Quincy entered day three unbeaten and would have met in the winner-take-all championship final Sunday afternoon with wins today, but No. 3E Southern Indiana and No. 2E Bellarmine had other plans. The latter two teams respectively beat the former two in win-or-go-home games.
The day started with a 6-1 win for Bellarmine over No. 3W Maryville to send the Saints home, while USI handed out the same fate to No. 4W Missouri S&T with a 10-0 shutout. The Screaming Eagles’ win over the Miners forced an immediate turnaround against UIndy where they nearly produced another 10-run win, topping the Greyhounds 9-5.
Quincy was idle all day, but unable to punch its ticket directly to the championship game, falling 13-4 to Bellarmine in the nightcap.
Both USI-UIndy and BU-QU will play at 9 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively, in a rematch of today’s games with the winners meeting in the final game at 4 p.m. for the league’s coveted hardware.
