OZARK, Mo. – Quincy University repeated as the victors, claiming the 2018 Great Lakes Valley Conference Baseball Tournament league trophy for the fourth time in school history on Sunday evening at U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark, Missouri. This was the second consecutive win in the finals for the Hawks, while their first two Conference Championship crowns came in 2000 and 2011.
No. 2W Quincy had to win two games today to defend its Conference trophy, defeating No. 3E Bellarmine, 6-5, for redemption from its 13-4 loss to the Knights the previous evening, before topping Indianapolis 8-4 in the title contest.
Ahead of today’s games, the Hawks opened the postseason event on Thursday with a 10-inning win against No. 3E Southern Indiana, 5-4, before earning an 11-9 victory over No. 4W Missouri S&T on Friday.
This was Quincy’s eighth trip to the championship game, as J.C. DeMuri and Jake Viaene paced the team offensively, each turning in 3-for-5 clips at the plate, while DeMuri also scored three runs.
The Hawks called in four pitchers to the mound, with Sam Stephens earning the win in just his second career start through 5.0 innings, while UIndy played seven hurlers in total with the loss credited to starter Jon Crawford after just 0.1 innings of work.
With the win, Quincy earned the league’s automatic berth to the 2018 NCAA Division II Baseball Tournament. The NCAA D-II Selection Show occurred earlier tonight and revealed Quincy as the No. 5 seed, drawing No. 4 Ohio Dominican in the first game. Illinois Springfield was seeded No. 1 as an at-large choice with hosting duties, despite bowing out early from the GLVC tournament, and will face the Great Midwest Athletic Conference AQ Hillsdale. No. 2 Bellarmine and No. 7 Southern Indiana also earned at-large bids and will play each other at the regional.
