EAST PEORIA, Ill. – On a day where it was uncertain whether even one game would be played due to forecasted storms, six teams advanced to the second day of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Softball Championship Tournament after competing in eight games that included six contests in the winners’ bracket and two in the losers’ bracket. Competition resumes Friday, May 4 at 11 a.m. Central Time at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Illinois.

Two teams survived the first day unscathed, including No. 4 seed University of Missouri-St. Louis and No. 6 seed University of Southern Indiana, winning both of their games to remain in the winners’ bracket. Missouri-St. Louis defeated 5-seed Truman State University 3-1 in Game 2 to start the day before upsetting top-seed University of Illinois Springfield in an 8-0 shutout in Game 7. Southern Indiana found its way through the day with two upsets, starting with a 4-0 victory in Game 4 over No. 3 seed University of Indianapolis, followed by a 5-inning, 10-0 throttling of second-seeded McKendree University in Game 8. Now the Tritons and Screaming Eagles will face each other in a 1 p.m. contest tomorrow afternoon.

Two other teams were not so fortunate, having been eliminated from the league’s postseason event after two losses in the double-elimination tournament. Truman fell to UMSL first and then got handed a 10-3 upset courtesy No. 8 Missouri S&T in the elimination Game 5, while No. 7 William Jewell College dropped its first game 4-1 against McKendree in Game 3 before getting knocked out by a 6-3 comeback win via Indianapolis in Game 6. Additionally, Game 1 saw UIS beat S&T 5-1.

In addition, USI head coach Sue Kunkle recorded her 500th career win against UIndy, while both of the top-two seeds fell into the losers’ bracket for the second straight year.

On Friday, Game 9 and 10 will open the day when McKendree takes on S&T and UIS faces UIndy, respectively, at 11 a.m. Game 11 follows with the UMSL-USI matchup before the Game 9 and 10 winners square off at 3 p.m. Closing out the second day will be the Game 12 winner versus the loser of Game 11 at 5 p.m. in Game 13.

Streaming on the GLVC Sports Network will occur for all games on GLVCSN.com, the iOS/Android mobile apps, or on the GLVCSN iOS/Android mobile apps, as well as on the Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV and Android TV OTT platforms. A replay of all games played on Thursday can be found on every platform by selecting the “On Demand” tab and searching for the stream.
