ROMEOVILLE, Illinois – The Missouri S&T men and University of Indianapolis women hold the lead in their respective team races after Friday’s second day of the 2018 Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which is being hosted at Lewis Stadium on the campus of Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois.
Through seven events scored, Missouri S&T owns 73 points to lead the men’s field, while UIndy (59.5), Lewis (43), Bellarmine University (28), and the University of Southern Indiana (16) are placed in the top five. Maryville University (11) is sixth, Truman State University (9.5) is seventh, and McKendree University (8) and University of Illinois Springfield (8) are tied for eighth. Drury University (5) is 10th overall, followed by William Jewell College (4) in 11th. Quincy University has yet to score and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside is ineligible to score team points due to GLVC sanctions.
On the women’s side, UIndy sits first with 62 points, Lewis (53), McKendree (33), Southern Indiana (30) are second through fourth, and Truman State (23.5) and Missouri S&T (23.5) are tied for fifth. Bellarmine (22) and William Jewell (14) are seventh and eighth, while Maryville (10) sits ninth. Drury, Illinois Springfield and Quincy have yet to score.
Lewis’ Cierra Pulliam fouled on her first two attempts in the triple jump, but her third attempt of 13.01 meters shattered every notable mark attached to the event. Her jump eclipsed her winning mark (12.29m) last year, reset the GLVC record (12.56m), and eclipsed the NCAA automatic qualifying standard (12.75m).
In the men’s triple jump, Missouri S&T sophomore Bailey Crone jumped 14.21 meters on his second attempt, which was good for the winning mark.
UIndy junior thrower Katie Monk successfully defended her gold medals in the shot put (14.88m) and hammer throw (55.52m), the latter of which shattered her own GLVC record (52.54m) set last year.
Fellow UIndy junior Austin Hogan threw 17.01 meters for a winning effort in the men’s shot put, which slightly bettered his winning heave of 17.00 meters from last year.
In the men’s hammer throw, Missouri S&T senior John Karsten outdistanced himself by more than four meters from his nearest competitor with a winning launch and NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 60.13 meters.
The women’s pole vault featured three freshmen on the medal stand, as Truman State’s Cassie Jennings earned first place at 3.67 meters, while UIndy’s Kylie Falcone (3.67m) and Mary Costello (3.57m) picked up second and third.
It was an underclassmen affair in the men’s pole vault as well. Bellarmine sophomore Ben Stone, Missouri S&T freshman Joseph Nickell and Maryville sophomore Drew Kowalski all reached 4.65 meters, but it was Stone that earned the gold on fewer misses.
In the distance events, Lewis junior Abby Tripp (38:59.37) and Bellarmine junior Joseph Drabot (33:11.22) claimed titles in the 10,000 meters, while Missouri S&T senior Megan Schulte (11:05.02) and Lewis senior Michael Leet (8:54.76) earned gold in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Leek’s time shattered the GLVC record by nearly four seconds, which was set by USI’s Hunter Motz (8:58.38) back in 2015.
Friday also marked the conclusion of the heptathlon and decathlon, which was won by Bellarmine senior Bridgette Mangold (4,554) and Missouri S&T sophomore Ezekiel Buck (6,839), respectively. Buck broke the GLVC record of 6,797, which was set by Lewis’ Bryce Holesinger in 2016.
All first-place finishers were named GLVC Champion and first-team All-GLVC, while runners-up earned second-team All-GLVC distinction.
Action resumes at Lewis Stadium at 9 a.m. CT Saturday with the women’s discus and high jump as well as the men’s javelin and long jump. Running events commence at 11 a.m. with the 4x100-meter relay.
