Missouri S&T earned its fourth Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship Saturday in the closest title race since 2009.
The Miners earned their first title in that 2009 GLVC Championship with a one-point victory over the University of Indianapolis, which fell runner-up to S&T this year by a mere six points at Lewis Stadium on the campus of Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois.
Missouri S&T took home the outdoor crown, which was its first since winning back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015, with 182.5 points, just six markers in front of the UIndy(176.5). Host Lewis (131.66) was third overall, followed by McKendree University (84) and Bellarmine University (52.5) in fifth. The University of Southern Indiana (50) and Truman State University (34.5) placed sixth and seventh, respectively, while Maryville University (22), Drury University (15.33), University of Illinois Springfield (8) and William Jewell College (4) rounded out the field. Quincy University competed but did not score. The University of Wisconsin-Parkside was not issued a team score due to GLVC sanctions.
At the conclusion of the event, McKendree junior DeMontez McCray was honored as GLVC Track Athlete of the Year for the second straight season, just as UIndy junior Austin Hogan was with GLVC Field Athlete of the Year accolades. UIndy newcomer Brady Walden became the first Greyhound named GLVC Freshman of the Year since Hogan won in 2015, while Missouri S&T’s Shaun Meinecke was voted by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year. He is the first Miner head coach to win the award since Sterling Martin won his third Coach of the Year honor (2009-14-15) in 2015.
Thirteen individuals were also tabbed by their respective coaches as James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees for the sport of men’s outdoor track and field. These individuals will now be placed on a ballot with other male honorees from their schools as candidates for their own school’s overall winner of the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award. The league coaches also selected Missouri S&T as the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award team winner.
