INDIANAPOLIS – University of Indianapolis senior Graham McAree has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Men’s Golf Player of the Year, while teammate Ian Carroll earned the Freshman of the Year nod, it was announced by the Conference office on Tuesday. In addition, Maryville University head coach Glenn Paulus was chosen by his peers as GLVC Coach of the Year, while five individuals completed the 12-member All-Conference team.

McAree has been named the GLVC Player of the Year for the second time (2016) in his career and earns his third major award, as he was also voted Freshman of the Year in 2015. He becomes the ninth Greyhound to earn the league’s top honor while this is the 13th all-time distinction for a UIndy player. At the GLVC Championships, the senior won individual medalist honors with a two-under par 214 (72-76-66) to earn All-GLVC honors for the fourth year in a row. In addition, he won both of his medal-match play rounds with a 72 and 69, leading UIndy to its league-best 16th title. The product of Fishers, Ind., averaged 72.5 strokes in 30 rounds this season, finishing as the co-medalist at the UWP Spring Invite (70-71) and runner-up at the Division I Butler Fall Invite (70-66-70), which earned him his third career GLVC Player of the Week laurel on Oct. 5. He currently ranks as the second-highest GLVC player in the Midwest Region.

Carroll is the fifth UIndy newcomer to earn the league’s top honor, while the third in five years, following in the footsteps of McAree’s 2015 win and Andrew VanAeist’s selection in 2014. In addition to his major award, he also earned a spot on the All-GLVC team based on a vote of the GLVC coaches. At the Conference Championships, Carroll finished tied for 8th (73-78-73) in the individual race and won both matches during match-play action with scores of 73 and 71. During the course of his inaugural collegiate campaign in 2017-18, he averaged 73.9 strokes over 30 rounds, placing fourth at the Butler Invite (70-73-71) and runner-up at the Findlay Spring Invite (69-73). The East Lansing, Mich., native earned a GLVC Player of the Week nod on March 29 and is currently the top-ranked freshman in the region.

Paulus is the first Saints skipper to be honored by his peers as Coach of the Year in the sport and only the second from Maryville to win a postseason award, as sophomore Jake Newman won the Freshman of the Year accolade last season. The 11th-year mentor led his squad to its first-ever berth in the medal-match play portion of the GLVC Championships this season, securing the No. 2 seed. His Saints went on to defeat defending champion and No. 3 Bellarmine University, 4-1, in the semifinals before falling to UIndy in the championship match, 4.5-0.5. Paulus has guided two to All-GLVC recognition this season, as both junior Joey Williams and Newman placed second and third, respectively, at the league’s postseason tournament.

Along with the McAree, Williams, and Newman, University of Southern senior Preston Van Winkle, UIndy sophomore Erik Edwards, Bellarmine junior James Inman, and UIndy sophomore Spencer Klimek each made the All-GLVC team by way of their top-5 finish at the Conference event. All-GLVC merits also went to UIndy’s Carroll, Bellarmine sophomore Corey Teaford, Drury University junior Craig Stefureak, McKendree University senior Keenai Sampson, and University of Missouri- St. Louis senior Markus Lindberg. Those five were chosen based on a vote of the league coaches.

The league also recognized 14 GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award nominees and two team award winners due to a tie in voting between Indianapolis and Maryville. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced in May.
