INDIANAPOLIS – University of Indianapolis junior forward Taylor Peck, freshman goalkeeper Sophia Saucerman and head coach Holly Cox, along with McKendree University senior goalkeeper Zoe Brochu have earned major postseason honors for the 2019 Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Soccer season, it was announced by the league office Thursday evening. Peck was voted by the league coaches as GLVC Offensive Player of the Year, Brochu was named Defensive Player of the Year, Saucerman was picked as Freshman of the Year, and mentor Cox garnered Coach of the Year from her peers. Including these award winners, a total of 33 standouts were named to the 2019 All-Conference Teams, as voted on by the league coaches, while 16 were chosen as GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship nominees for the sport with Bellarmine selected as the team sportsmanship winner. The annual awards were presented Thursday at a reception on the eve of the GLVC Championship Tournament.
Peck becomes the first-ever Greyhound to be named Offensive Player of the Year and is just the third major award winner for Indianapolis, as Jenna Silverman was named Player of the Year in 2003 – before the award was split into Offensive and Defensive accolades – while Shelby Spinelli was chosen as the Freshman of the Year in 2009. The junior earned the league’s top offensive honor after registering Conference-best marks with nine goals and six game-winners through 17 total games, was tied for the second-most points (21), and was third in points per game (1.17) and goals per game (0.50). In 15 GLVC games, the forward tied for the most goals (seven) and ranked second with 17 points, 1.13 points per game, 0.47 goals per game, and five game-winning goals. Additionally, Peck collected the final three GLVC Offensive Player of the Week honors of the season (Oct. 21 & 28, Nov. 4) and is one of two players unanimously chosen to the All-GLVC First Team.
Last year, Brochu was McKendree’s first-ever Defensive Player of the Year and second major award winner after teammate Sydnee Carroll collected Offensive laurels in 2016. This year, she repeats the recognition as the top defensive player in the league. In 1660:00 of action through 18 games, the senior registered a league-best .888 save percentage after making 71 saves and allowing nine goals. Those nine goals put her second in the league for goals against average at 0.49, while her seven shutouts is also second best. In GLVC-only contests, the netminder is second in goals against average (0.39), save percentage (.908), and shutouts (six). Throughout the season, she earned her sixth career GLVC Defensive Player of the Week award on Sept. 30 and becomes a back-to-back First Team All-GLVC honoree.
Saucerman impressed between the pipes in her rookie season and was awarded accordingly as the GLVC Freshman of the Year. Just the second Greyhound to be chosen as the Conference’s top newcomer, the goalkeeper finished fourth in the loop with a 0.58 goals against average through 15 games played and was fifth with a .859 save percentage. In 1120:12 minutes against GLVC foes, she clocked in at third for save percentage (.877) and fourth for goals against average (0.56). Moreover, Saucerman netted the final two GLVC Defensive Player of the Week laurels from Oct. 28 and Nov. 4 and was voted to the All-GLVC Second Team.
Cox was selected by her peers for the first time as GLVC Coach of the Year, and is also the first Greyhound mentor to be named as such. In her fifth season at the helm, she led the Hounds to a 13-4-1 overall record and an 11-3-1 mark in GLVC play, which helped the team earn the No. 2 seed in the GLVC Championship Tournament. Before its loss in the quarterfinal round, UIndy was nationally ranked for the first time under Cox at No. 25 in the United Soccer Coaches poll. The squad has also been ranked seventh for the last two weeks in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region rankings. In addition to her most successful season to date, she guided both Peck and Saucerman to major awards and All-league laurels along with to other second-team picks and three on the Third Team.
Of the 33 All-Conference selections, UIndy led the way with seven representatives, while Truman State University followed with five. Bellarmine University, McKendree, and Rockhurst University each had four selections, while Maryville followed close behind with three. With two honorees apiece was Lewis University and University of Southern Indiana, while University of Illinois Springfield Missouri S&T rounded out the group with a single selection.
Joining Peck and Brochu on the First Team was Rockhurst junior midfielder Jillian Leetch – the other unanimous choice – and Hawks freshman defender Greta Seal. Maryville junior forward Alex Johnson and USI junior defender Madelyne Juenger become three-time All-GLVC honorees with this first-team nod, while Lewis senior forward Kailey Parnello and McKendree senior defender Anna Hanger pick up back-to-back postseason recognition. McKendree senior midfielder Madyson Mossman, UIS senior forward Maggie Juhlin, and Truman senior midfielder Hanna Burke round out the top 11.
The league also recognized 16 GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees and one Team award winner: Bellarmine – honored for the second year in a row. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school’s two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
