INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference released Saturday night the bracket for the 2019 GLVC Volleyball Championship Tournament. Defending Champion Rockhurst University earned the No. 1 seed and Regular Season title. The tournament is again being held in East Peoria, Ill., at the EastSide Centre from Friday, Nov. 22 through Sunday, Nov. 24.
Lewis University, University of Missouri-St. Louis, University of Indianapolis and Drury University respectively earned seeds 2-5, while Bellarmine University filled the No. 6 spot with University of Illinois Springfield at No. 7 and Missouri S&T rounding out the field in eighth.
At 13-2 in league play with a .867 winning percentage, the 20th-ranked Hawks won their fourth GLVC Regular Season title and the top seed in this year’s postseason. Overall, Rockhurst went 26-7 and are also ranked sixth in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region. On Friday, Nov. 22 at 8:30 p.m. Central Time, it will play a quarterfinal match against No. 8 Missouri S&T (21-9, 8-7 GLVC), which was beat out in a tiebreaker by Illinois Springfield after a head-to-head loss to the Prairie Stars on Oct 4. Earlier in the season, Rockhurst swept S&T 3-0 at home on Oct. 25. This is the 15th bid to the postseason for the Hawks, as they have qualified every single year since becoming a league member in 2005, while it’s the sixth bid for the Miners but first since 2015.
Overall, Lewis went 26-4 during the regular season with a 12-3 GLVC mark and will face No. 7 Illinois Springfield (19-13, 8-7) in the second match on Friday, Nov. 22 at 2:30 p.m. The Flyers earned the second seed thanks to a head-to-head win over Missouri-St. Louis on Oct. 25, while UIS gleaned the seventh seed due to its head-to-head win over S&T on Oct. 4. This quarterfinal contest will be a rematch from Oct. 8 where Lewis won in four sets at home. The Flyers are currently ranked 12th in the nation by the AVCA and No. 1 in the latest Regional Rankings, while they extend a league-best mark for postseason appearances with their 29th berth in the championship and will look to lengthen their league record for GLVC Championship crowns with No. 11. UIS enters the postseason for the third time in program history in as many years.
Riding a GLVC-best, seven-match win streak, Missouri-St. Louis (27-3, 12-3) picked up the third seed following a head-to-head loss at Lewis on Oct. 25. The Tritons will battle 6-seed Bellarmine (20-10, 10-5) Friday, Nov. 22 at 11:30 a.m. to open the quarterfinal round. The 23rd-ranked Tritons beat the Knights 3-1 on Nov. 2 at home, while UMSL and Bellarmine are respectively ranked third and 10th in the region. This is UMSL’s 19th trip to the league event, while Bellarmine will make its third consecutive and 13th overall visit.
No. 4 seed Indianapolis (20-8, 11-4) will be attending its 21st GLVC tournament and 20th in a row and will compete against No. 5 Drury (17-15, 11-4) at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 22. Each of the four winners from Friday will advance to the semifinals set for 2:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 23. The winners of each semifinal match will face each other on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 12 p.m. for a shot at being crowned 2019 GLVC Volleyball Champions.
