INDIANAPOLIS – No. 7 University of Southern Indiana bested No. 1 McKendree University, 4-3, in a penalty kick shootout after playing to a 0-0 draw through double overtime to the 2019 Great Lakes Valley Conference Women's Soccer Championship on Sunday, Nov. 17 at Woehrle Athletic Complex in Jeffersonville, Ind. The Screaming Eagles earned their program’s first GLVC Women’s Soccer Championship title and tied last year’s 7-seed champion Rockhurst as the lowest seeded team in league history to do so.
Despite multiple scoring opportunities for both teams throughout the match’s 110 minutes, as evidenced by a combined 37 shots with 16 on goal, neither McKendree nor Southern Indiana were able to penetrate the strong play of USI freshman goalkeeper Maya Etienne and McKendree senior goalie and GLVC Defensive Player of the Year Zoe Brochu. Etienne had seven saves during that time to extend her program shutout record to 11, while Brochu turned away nine.
That 0-0 draw forced a penalty kick shootout, and it was USI that would lead off with junior defender Madelyne Juenger converting the first. McKendree graduate forward Sydnee Carroll shot first for the Bearcats and tied the shootout at 1-1. Sophomore forward Katlyn Andres would bury the next one for USI before Etienne made a big stop against Bearcats senior midfielder/forward Madyson Mossman to keep the Eagles up 2-1. Senior midfielder/forward Caroline Canoy stepped up next and extended USI’s lead to 3-1, while McKendree sophomore midfielder Emma Knoebel made it 3-2. Junior forward Maggie Winter converted next for USI, which went up 4-2. Sophomore midfielder/forward Olivia Dreyer scored next for McKendree before Brochu would make a save on senior defender Loryn Willis’ attempt to keep the Bearcats alive. It was Etienne, however, who played hero by making another stop on the fifth and final attempt, securing the first GLVC title in USI program history.
The seventh-seeded Eagles (12-6-2), which finally garnered the elusive Conference crown in their 14th appearance in the postseason event, earned the league's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Division II Women's Soccer Tournament. They will play in their first national tournament since 1998 when they advanced to the quarterfinals and find out their opponent during Monday evening's NCAA Division II Selection Show at 6 p.m. ET.
