INDIANAPOLIS – In the quarterfinal round of the 2019 Great Lakes Valley Conference Volleyball Championship Tournament, the four higher seeded teams advanced to Saturday’s semifinal matches, which are being held in East Peoria, Ill., at the EastSide Centre.
Third-seeded University of Missouri-St. Louis got the first round of matches started with a 3-0 sweep over sixth-seeded Bellarmine University. Despite the final scoreline, this first match of the day was close from start to finish with set scores of 25-21, 25-23, 25-23 in favor of the 22nd-ranked Tritons. This was only the fourth tournament win for UMSL and is the first time it will advance to the semifinals since 2010. Inside the box score, the Tritons hit .244 and totaled 47 kills (15.67 per set) led by senior Kylie Rudsinski .524 clip and 13 kills, while Bellarmine hit .144 hitting with 39 kills.
No. 2 seed Lewis University won the second quarterfinal contest over No. 7 seed University of Illinois Springfield in four sets, 3-1, to move on to the semifinals for the fifth time in a row and 16th overall in program history. The 13th-ranked Flyers dominated the opening set, hitting .333 and holding Illinois Springfield to a -.128 hitting percentage en route to a 25-9 win. Set two saw a 25-17 victory for Lewis, while the third set went to UIS, 25-19, thanks to a .170 hitting clip and holding Lewis to .018. The fourth and final set was a back-and-forth battle that saw the Flyers open with a 12-9 lead before the Stars went for a 9-1 run that gave them the lead at 18-13, which eventually grew to 24-18. Trailing by six set points, the Flyers chipped away to tie the stanza at 24-24 and ultimately survive 29-27.
No. 4 University of Indianapolis earned its first GLVC Championship Tournament win in four years by downing Drury University in five sets, 3-2. Of note was senior setter Alyssa Spears’ match-high 59-assist performance to surpass 4,000 in her career. Senior attacker Katie Furlong also reached a milestone with her 1,000th career kill after totaling a contest-best 23. It was a back-and-forth battle all night, as the match saw 27 ties and 11 lead changes throughout the five sets with the Greyhounds taking the first, third, and deciding fifth frame that included scores of 26-24, 25-27, 25-18, 17-25, 15-10. Drury recorded 21 blocks in the loss, including 32 block assists that nearly matched a program record.
After a marathon match immediately preceding the nightcap, No. 1 Rockhurst University made quick work of No. 8 Missouri S&T, bookending the day with 3-0 sweeps. The first set went to the 21st-ranked Hawks 25-18, which was followed by a 25-13 win in the second frame before they finished it off with a 25-17 victory. Rockhurst tallied a .337 hitting percentage, finishing with 44 kills, 56 digs, and six team blocks while limiting the Miners to a .110 hitting clip. The Hawks will now play in their 11th semifinal round with a chance still alive to defend their 2018 GLVC crown.
No. 2 seed Lewis will face No. 3 seed Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 2:30 p.m. Central Time in the first of two semifinal matches. No. 1 Rockhurst will follow against No. 4 UIndy at 5:30 p.m. to conclude the semifinal round.
